I noticed that the schools outline the "maximum estimate of manadatory fees per year" and include things like Athletic laundry, infirmary fee, tuition refund plan, technology etc. There is no mention of books anywhere on any of our acceptances. I assume these are additional. Am I correct? If so, about how much do they run a year?

my child's school provides parents with an estimate of $600-700. You can save $ buying used. We did for some classes and spent about $450 this past year.

Plan on about $500

I believe we spent right around $500. Our school buys the books back as well, so you can get money for your next set of books. When my older son was a student, he would trade books with other students and ended up not spending much at all after freshman year.

Probably around $500 for boarding school, but my parents had to spent nearly $800, and some were even used! I'm taking seven classes, though.

Mine said 800-1,500 dollars.

Exeter said $850.

Wow, Aussie, looks like your school uses the most expensive books...and lots of them!

I thought someone mentioned a website where you could buy books at a discounted price.??? Is that correct?

If you can get the booklist in advance from the school, you can buy them online. I think amazon.com has good prices, but you are right....someone did mention another site.

This is the website you want:

If you have to pay for the textbooks, do you get to keep them?

Yes, you may keep them if you wish. Some schools allow you to sell them back....I would imagine most schools do this, it is how they get used textbooks to sell. Lots of students trade books with eachother so they don't have to purchase all their books as well.

That was one of the benefits my daughter found from attending boarding school this year: annotating in books. Since all my children had attended public schools, books are free, but you're not allowed to write in them.

Does anyone know when you receive your class list/book list? Is it during the summer?

I didn't know what books I had to get until I got there and got my schedule, I had to buy them from the school store - they offered both used and new, though and at the end of the year we sell them all back. I like being able to buy them...I remember stuff sooo much better when I highlight the book and write it. And used books can be quite useful, especially if you get one that belonged to somebody who was a good highlighter and highlighted all the important parts.

I did not get my list of books until I got my course list
i say about $800-900
depends on the grade
