Costume Design - How, Where?

Hi. I'm a fashion designer from Argentina. I want to study costume design in the USA. I've graduated from the University of Buenos Aires with what I hope could be considered a bachelor in fashion design in USA. I don't know where to study, if I should go for a BFA o a MFA... It seems like it's really hard to get into a college. I'm a little worried that I might not be able to study. Does anyone have any recomendations or advice of any kind? Thank you!

Hi, Snowells. If I were you, I would talk to the schools. BFA programs generally start at the beginning. Since you don’t really need that, I’m guessing you belong in an MFA program but please don’t take my word for it. Call the schools. When you talk to them, ask what they would like to see in a portfolio and tailor your content to the school. If you have a solid portfolio and a good attitude, it is not so hard to get into a good design program.

Hi-since you have already graduated from UBA, an MFA program would seem to make more sense for you. If you went for a BFA you would in essence be repeating undergraduate school all over again, arguably a waste of time and money.

There may also be non-degree programs; you may want to look into that as well. Good luck.

Carnegie Mellon has both undergraduate and graduate costume programs. I saw some of their students’ work last spring at a dance program and was SO impressed.
