So if I have the "usual" Wharton stats (you know, 4.0, regional/national awards for debate and science research and latin, NSF [hopefully going by my PSAT], bunch of honors societies, hardest classes possible, etc...) and am a female applying ED, could that help? Because I've been told that there are more males than females, and I know that most schools like roughly 50/50 if they can get all qualified applicants. So with the typical ED profile, would my being female be a slight advantage?

Also, how about URM? I'm technically Hispanic, but identify a lot more as white. But I know that at that tier, so many people who could barely even pass for a URM mark it down, so I feel that by not marking it, I'd be putting myself at a disadvantage...

Any opinions?

I know that Wharton is trying to get closer to that 50/50 level, but the fact that its still somewhere around 42/58 means that its not going to make or break you in the decision process, but it certainty won’t hurt.

And it won’t hurt to put down Hispanic either. Penn is known for being an affirmative action school.

Good Luck.

bump… because it’s 4 AM and my insomnia is running rampant tonight…

born2dance94 - New Penn mom (2015) here of a S who is also “technically hispanic” but who speaks German, not Spanish. He wanted Huntsman (saw a diff post) but didn’t know you should apply ED (he had already done ED to Yale, deferred, then denied) but was admitted to Whartons. I say mark the URM box…it can only help. And if you are admitted you will be invited to the scholars preview and if you ask, they will possibly pay for your trip (depending upon where you come from). Also if you mark hispanic there are some schools that give full scholarships to National Hispanic Scholars (in case you aren’t NMS)…not sure you’d want to attend any, but again it can’t hurt.

Thank you! That was very helpful! I think I’ll mark it (:

Your welcome…my S was a NHS and it made him kind of angry because he was being recognized for it…I say you have to take advantage of any opportunity you can. You will never really know if a college accepts you for your grades, test scores, ecs, essays, legacy, sex, or nationality.

I hopeee crossing my fingers I’ll be a NMS. Unless NY goes up by more than a few points this year, I should be.

If I do get in, Scholars Preview sounds really good, but I’m worried because no one really knows me at school as Hispanic (though I do have dark skin and both a first and last name that are relatively common for Hispanics-- Michelle, and I don’t feel comfortable writing my last name up here. lol). But I’m also middle eastern, so people know me more as White or middle eastern and assume that’s why I have pretty tan skin, which is partly true. So I worry that people will think I only got in for being a URM, especially because people at my school are supppppper competitive. Even with only ever having gotten a few As and one B+ sophomore year with the rest all A+s, I’m like somewhere between 10-15 in my grade. To be higher I would have to have had an A+ in like every class. So if I do mark down URM, I don’t plan to tell people and don’t really think I will end up going to Scholars Preview or another such program at another school.

Hmmm…good question. I guess it depends: Are you hot?

@meursalt. You’re right. That’s really all it comes down to in the end. I guess I better dress really sexy for the interview. I hope it’s not a girl. ::rolls eyes:: sarcasm

born2dance94 - As a mom, I guess I don’t understand WHY it matters what others at your school think of who or what you are. There is nothing wrong with being a URM or a woman or a NMS. Take advantage of every opportunity you can. My S is Spanish and no one would think he was hispanic if his name wasn’t hispanic. You will be invited to programs at schools, some overnights, other not, some paid for, some not. Do what you want to do…leave all those super competative people behind in your dust LOL! Rock on girl…oh and be super sexxy hot too (LOL sarcasm)
