I'm applying to Yale and wondering if I actually have a chance to get in. My Composite ACT is only a 29 but I'm taking it this weekend in the hopes of at least getting in the low 30's. My highest individual scores are English-29 Math-30 Reading-31 and Science-30. My GPA is 3.85 on an unweighted 4.0 scale. My extracirricular activities include Football, Baseball, Math Club, FBLA, and Basketball. Also, not sure if it matters but my ethnicity is Native American. Do I have a shot at getting accepted? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

As for your stats - they are low balled, but frankly being NA is a hook.

Best of luck - considering Yale is very inconsistent with denial / acceptance - EA would be a hook if you’re doing it, as it will raise your chance by maybe 5%

Unfortunately I didn’t get my application done in time for EA, but thaks for your opinion

It’s certainly true that being a Native American is a hook, and will help you at many selective colleges (assuming that they will agree that you are Native American–some will ask for your tribal enrollment). Your scores are on the low side for Yale, probably even for a URM, but if you increase them you will have a good shot. I think you will get into a very good school, even if it’s not Yale.

I’m enrolled in the Oglala Sioux Tribe so that shouldn’t be an issue. My top two school choices are Yale and Stanford and I’m hoping to be accepted to at least one of them.

Considering those two schools have two of the lowest 4 overall acceptance rates at 7.35% and 7.1% (only Harvard at 6.2% and Columbia at 6.9% were lower) and the RD rates of those two schools are the lowest behind Columbia’s 5.64% (Yale at 5.65% and Stanford at 5.89%) you might want to have a few safeties in mind as well. ;)

Yeah I realize the abysmal admission rates of both schools and do have backup schools. My backup schools are Creighton and a local state college

You might also want to take the SAT and two subject tests. Your chances of admission would be significantly higher with a 31 ACT or SAT equivalent.
