Could I get into UMich with a sub-3.8+ GPA?

Okay, so I am a current junior, and I have thoroughly looked into Umich and really want to try to get in. It’s my dream school. I’ve had pretty weak freshman and sophomore years (major improvement semester 2 soph year 3.76 uw) and my semester one gpa for junior year is going to be a 3.83 umich gpa. My psat is a 1260, basically slept through the test, very confident I can skyrocket that score in March.

My classes currently are:
Honors English
AP Chemistry
AP Psychology
Pre-Calculus
French 3
Civics + Sociology

Senior year (prospective)
AP Lit
AP Calc BC
AP Biology
APUSH
French 4
Physics

Do I have a chance?? Applying to LSA. If I can get stellar grades senior year and bring up my sat to a 1500?? Any input would be great!

I was just admitted to LSA with a 3.73 GPA and a 1440 SAT. My high school does suffer from grade deflation however, even with my “low” GPA I was still ranked 30 something out of 550 kids. Are you in state? That will be a huge factor in your admissions decision.

The standardized test score may be used to gauge the GPA scale of your HS. If you (and other students from your school) have a high test score but a lower GPA, the adcom knows there is deflation. For OP, you have to prove it to be the case. A PSAT 1260 in junior year indicates your current SAT score to be far below the admission range. What is your current cumulative Umich GPA? The consider GPA and course rigor to be more important than test score.

Umich gpa: 3.61
In-State

You may want to ask your GC or look up the Naviance data. Just looking at the number, it is not optimistic.

It’s worth a shot. Just try to ace the SAT, and I would say there’s a decent chance. Michigan is very selective and it’s going to be a reach no matter how good your grades are. Don’t stress! The key to college is loving a school that loves you back.

Remember that college name is not everything. And getting into college doesn’t guarantee the major you want, especially if it’s a competitive major. You want to tour the campus and talk to students to see if it’s a good fit for you. Some cultures and environments are not a great fit for certain people. Michigan is super competitive, especially with their business and tech majors. Some thrive on competition, others are turned off by it.

You want to apply to a variety of schools and tour the ones you get into. You might find that Michigan State or another school altogether is the better fit. Once you’re accepted into school, you get to be the one who is selective.

In-state with a 3.83 GPA and 50th+ percentile SAT should be fine, with good essays.

Would it be better just to go somewhere where I’ll get more scholarships?

If you’re in-state it will be hard to find a better bang for your buck than UMich.

I know I can write a really good essay and if all of the other parts of my application are strong, with the GPA as the only weakness, do I really stand a chance?? Because I want to at least try.

And would it hurt me to take AP Stats instead of APUSH? Since I won’t have all five core classes

What’s the reason for the change? It is preferred to keep the 4 cores and you have AP calc on the list already. A 3.61 cumulative uwGPA would impact your chance significantly unless your school’s naviance suggests otherwise.

Would the fact that my GPA follows a large upward trend help my chances? 9th Grade- 3.45, 10th- 3.55 11th- 4.1

Upward trend helps, however, GPA 4.1 cannot be uwGPA in 4.0 max scale.

With the UMich scale, it is more like 9th- 3.4 10th- 3.6 11th- 3.8 (first semester)

^^ If that helps

Would it be equally okay if i took an AP Class that I would enjoy more and take a history class as dual-enrollment instead?
