Could i get into Virginia Tech or Penn State Engineering?

I have a GPA UW of 3.65 and GPA W 3.7…I take both honors and AP classes

My ACT Scores were as follows
30 Math
31 Science
22 Reading
20 English

I am involved in a lot of extra curricular activities. I play Varsity soccer, Swim, and am a captain of the Tennis team.
As far as Clubs go i am in TSA (technological students association), and I am the Secretary of the STOP club (Students together opposing Prejudice). In addition i am attending boys state… what do you think my chances are of getting into these schools?

What other schools would you recommend me checking out on the east coast for engineering, i will go any where from Maine to Florida.

If you google the “common data sets” for both schools (which encapsulates the entire student body, not the more stringent engineering admissions), you’ll see that both will be very difficult for you.

  1. Meet w/your Guid counselor and ask him/her where other engineering hopefuls have targeted.

  2. re-take your ACT. A 26 composite limits you greatly.

  3. you may be over-involved in ECs. Curb some and focus more on your GPA and prepping to re-take ACT. Which ones? That’s for you to decide. At this point, none of them will assist you in getting into any college. Indeed, they may be severely limiting you due to your GPA/ACT. …

You got plenty of good advice in your other threads too. Your ACT is simply too low to make you competitive for lots of selective engineering programs. Indeed, this might not be the field for you unless you’re killing it in your chem/physics/calculus courses

PSU considers GPA 2/3 of the decision and SAT/other factors 1/3. Your ACT is in within the middle 50%. GPA isn’t that bad. If you apply for summer session and DUS/undecided, I think you’d have a good shot. You can complete any major’s first two years from DUS, including engineering.

I have a senior son who sounds just like you. 26 ACT 3.7 UW and 3.9 W. He did a little better on the SAT 1320 (CR and Math). You may give the SAT a try. (He does kill it in chem/physics/cal)

We knew going into the search the tippy top schools would not accept him into engineering. Good news is there are tons of schools out there. Your instate publics are a good place to start. Also understand with your scores and grades there is not going to be much if any merit money coming your way. Ask your parents now about budget.

What type of engineering are you interested in? My son wanted chemical so that knocked many schools off our radar.
