Could I get some help?

This is my financial aid for UC Davis.
What exactly does all of this mean?

Estimated Cost of Attendance
Basic Living $13,854.00
Books and Supplies $1,601.00
Fees $13,082.00
Transportation $722.00
Out of State $0.00
Summer $0.00
Mid Year Fee Increase $0.00
Other $0.00
Total Cost of Attendance $29,259.00

Contributions
Student Self Help Expectation $2,750.00
Student Contribution $0.00
Parent Contribution $0.00
Additional Resources $0.00
Total Contributions $2,750.00

Financial Need $26,509.00

Estimated Financial Aid
Ac. Competitive Grant Est.-NH $750.00
Cal Grant B Estimated-NH $1,551.00
Federal Direct Loan Sub-NH $3,500.00
Federal Pell Grant Program-NH $5,550.00
Federal Perkins Loan-NH $2,000.00
UCD Campus Fee Grant-NH $630.00
Entering UG Scholarship - NH $12,528.00
Total Estimated Financial Aid $26,509.00

Remaining Cost $0.00

It means you have to pay $2,750.00 (Your contribution.) Either by loans or cash.

And you’ll be taking out $5,500 in federal loans.

I’m guessing that $2,750 is the price of your textbooks and transportation (it adds up to $2,323) Though I could be wrong.

Look to see if that 12k Entering scholarship is ONLY for freshman, or not.

^^ um, no, it means:

The school expects to award you $15459 in grants (free $, does not have to be repaid). You can take out up to $11,050 in loans for the first year.

Based on what you posted, I am not clear on how much just tuition+room+board+mandatory fees are. It is important to find out the answer to that because that is a set amount that the school must get. Other expenses (such as books and transportation) can be higher or lower than estimated.

Eh? What do you mean?

$750.00 + $1,551.00 + $5,550 + $630.00 + $12,528.00 = $21,009 (so sayeth the calculator.) in grants.

Even if my calculator WAS mis-typed, It’d HAVE to be over 15k. 12+5 is over 15. (The pell and the Entering Scholarship.)

You figure that:

Total Cost of Attendance $29,259.00 - $21,009 = $8,250

The LOANS listed are $3,500 and $2,000 respectively. (That’s $5,500, for those of you keeping track.)

$8,250 - $5,500 is… ! $2,750

The EXACT amount the student contribution is.

You were right. I was wrong. I read that 5,500 as loan, not grant. Whew! MUCH better package. Glad I’m wrong. :-)

xD I’m glad you are too! I thought they were getting a pretty good deal!

(I’m not trying to come off angry, I’m just really bad at math, but I try hard to understand money. O_o; So sorry!)

:D

Looks like a very good package…

I wonder what the “NH” means that is by a lot of the grants…

Be aware that the loans may increase a bit each year. I imagine that by the time you graduate, you’ll have about $31k in loans.

Can I ask what your stats were? I’m wondering if kids with better stats get these better packages…

gpa: 4.2/4.0
sats: 1650
rank: 1/70
major: computer engineering.
My stats aren’t all that great, But I was ELC.

Oh, that’s right…sorry, I forgot…

Did you look into the additional funds for foster kids?
