I like this essay question alot, but I dont think I am going to apply to Upenn. May I use this essay as the "write about the topic of your choice" for my Wash U essay?

Also- for this question- do they care if I write about a hypothetical future situation ( ie- write about when Im 40 or somthing), or do they want an essay from my life so far?

Make sure to mention that you're not applying to UPenn, and that you only like the question. Otherwise it will look as if you really like UPenn. You are using part of one college's application to apply to another college. If you make clear that it's the question you like, and not the school, then you should be fine. But remember that Wash U is relatively big on demonstrated interest--they hate being second to Ivies (kind of like Tufts).
As for what you can write about...there's no rule!

I know WashU is big on demonstrated interest and known for "Tufts-syndrome" (at least on CC), so I don't know how they will view it there. But I remember hearing from an admissions officer at another school (MIT?) something along the lines of "We know you're going to be applying to other schools and you don't want to write dozens of different essays, so if you have another essay that you think would give us a really good idea of who you are, then submit it, but make sure you tell us what topic you're writing about"

I'd say that if you can help it, don't reuse an essay like that because the 217 bio question screams "I JUST WROTE THIS FOR PENN" and while that may not be the deciding factor in your review by the panel, it certainly doesn't help. If you don't want to write a lot of essays, try using one of the other three essays that Penn offeres, I feel they are a little more generic.

Also- for this question- do they care if I write about a hypothetical future situation ( ie- write about when Im 40 or somthing), or do they want an essay from my life so far?

-Many people whom I know who applied to Penn were asking themselves the same thing. The answer is: be creative! It doesnt matter either way.

I also find it funny that the school is still using that prompt. One of my English teachers in high school was telling me about what she wrote as an answer. Penn should be a little more creative with its prompts .
