Could someone help me (pre med college)?

I am a junior right now my GPA is really low but I have an upwards tend going. I did want to go to Johns Hopkins for pre med but then I was thinking if I should pay all that money if I have to go to med school and pay for that. I was thinking about just going to a state school (ugh) for pre med than going to a selective college for med school.

I want to do research for internal medicine, so is it worth it for me to TRY to get into Johns Hopkins (because I would have to apply ED) or should I just go to a state school?

Oh I’m sorry let me explain my question more. My gpa is like below 3.2 low (don’t want to give exact numbers). And I mean there are a lot of steps I planned out to help my chances at getting into JHU (test prep, extra work to go to nationals, talk to counselor about my situation, etc). I am saying I don’t want to take the time and money to do those steps to have a chance to get into JHU if in the long run it is not worth it since it takes A LOT less to get into the state school. I hope this clarifies my question more. Sorry.

With that GPA top schools are going to be a stretch no matter what. And since it sounds like money is important here, IMHO you’d be better off avoiding the debt now; you’ll get plenty of that in med school ;)

Lastly, why would you not do the “test prep, extra work to go to nationals, talk to counselor about my situation, etc” no matter where you are going? Seems to me, correct me if I’m wrong, that all of this makes you a better student and person. Are you saying that you’d only do it if you thought there was an immediate tangible benefit on your college chances? This may not be the best attitude if you want to be the kind of student that stands out in college and is an attractive prospect for med schools. My 2 cents worth, anyway…

^No because my test scores are good enough already to get into my state school. Well like if I’m going to a state I’m going to go have more senseless fun I’ll still read my prep books and try to do my best but I wouldn’t put 110% of my effort into it.

Colleges for pre-med have been discussed on lots of different threads. If you do a search you’ll find the consensus is that gpa and mcat scores are what matter for med school admissions. You may also be better off at schools that don’t have a lot of pre-meds competing for grades. Go to the cheapest school possible and save the money for med school.

Look at Knox College --Good med school acceptance rates (strong science/pre-med programs). I see that your GPA is lower than a 3.2 though…it’s worth a try. You might also want to look at Muhlenberg. Good luck!

I agree though, you are probably better off to head to an instate school for undergrad.
