If you don’t know what math class to sign up for, sign up for the one your intended major requires you to be in (ex. Comp Sci requires Math 140) or sign up for the math you’ll think you’ll get into. That’s what I did. I just looked at the core courses list and picked the ones that interested me, then looked at the schedule of classes website and picked when I wanted that class. I signed up for a class I now am not sure if I want to take, so if you or anyone else did that, what do we doo???

ugh I tried that. I wanted math140 (and I tested into it) and my advisor was like “lol no. take 220.” I regret listening to him, even though I have an A in 220. ugh. he suggested 220 over 140 before I even told him that I didn’t think that I was going to major in math or science w tf)? I know that since I’m not majoring in m/s (and I kinda told him I was THINKING about business but still incredibly unsure) that I probably shouldn’t take math140, but I like math enough to want to take it and I’ve already taken calc ab/bc in high school anyway so I might as well take the tough calc over the easy one. plus I’m undecided so WHAT IF I decide to major in something needing 140 (all majors will take 140, not all will take 220)? my second advisor who confirmed my schedule told me if I really wanted to take 140 that I should and it’s my choice…I should’ve listened to him instead of my jerk first (and permanent thanks to my univ class) advisor. I guess it’s all my fault.

if you signed up for a class you’re not sure you want to take, go to the first lecture or two. if you don’t like it, simply go to testudo and drop it and add a different class. or talk to your advisor about it. sometimes it sucks though, because I didn’t realize that I didn’t like a certain class until it was too late lol. but it’s not that bad. just boring and uninteresting.

when you enter spring semester, do NOT take muet210. everyone’s nice, it’s just boring boring boring. btw don’t forget to hit up ourumd.com. sorry for the really long, rambling post.

Thanks for the message, it really helps when I get to know more about the classes and scheduling. I have another question, have you, or any previous freshman, taken BSCI 105? I signed up for it (I am not even going to major in science) and thought I could just get it over with fall semester, but my friend recently told me that the class is really hard and it is not a good one to take. I think my major requires a science lab, so would you guys recommend taking this course? (I am taking it through freshman connection)

I didn’t take intro to bio but I was kinda planning to and looking at ourumd I’m kinda scared now esp since I’m not the biggest science person lol. you need a science lab regardless of what major you’re in, it’s a core requirement. are you a science major? because you can take bsci103 which from what it seems is kind of the same thing except it’s meant for non-science majors. I’m in astr100 (intro to astronomy for the non-science major) and I LOVE it, which says alot since I hate science lol. It has a lab too (I’m not in it though and I’m not quite sure why lol). I don’t think that it’s being offered for fc though sorry I’m not an fc person lol

btw, the overall gpa for bsci105 on ourumd is 2.7, if that helps.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I was offered a scholarship to Salisbury University and was spring admitted to UMD. I’m thinking about going to Salisbury for the first semester and then going to Maryland second semester if I don’t like Salisbury, and if I do like Salisbury I’ll just stay there. Now for the questions - Is this feasible? Will I (most likely) get on campus housing by accepting my spring admittance during the 1st semester at Salisbury or is that too late? When do we find out about UMD financial aid? What kind of sick pleasure is UMD taking by making my life so complicated?

My D and I were down at UMD last week for the open house to check out FC and the View apts. and I have to tell everyone to consider doing FC in the fall. My D who was very leary over the whole thing, felt much more comfortable about the FC, the View and the transition to next spring. Coming from Boston, and being the first child to send to college I was very nervous about the living arrangements and school experience but we both left the campus feeling she was making the right decision. My D, who had written off UMD after getting spring admit is now headed to UMD in the fall. Good luck to everyone with there decision.

While you are not “guaranteed” on-campus housing, it is EXTREMELY likely. The only problem is that you will get what comes available-not necessarily in with other freshmen. You could get put into an upper class dorm, dorms with established roommates and patterns, etc. You will not get put in with other freshmen, except if that’s how it falls. As for why UMD is doing this, my D go accepted to Northeastern for spring 2011 as well. One of her friends got into Lehigh for Spring 2011, so it seems like it’s becoming a little more of a way for schools to keep revenue streams up, when you may have students graduating, moving off campus, dropping out mid-year. My D was not excited about it at first, but after considering all the other schools she was accepted to PSU, JMU, NEU (Spring) Drexel, Pitt, going to a FC/UMd open house, checking out the View, getting some 1:1 time with the the FC coordinator, she is all good to go. We also signed her up for the Freshman First session in August as well, so we’re hoping that’s another means to getting into the UMd life, knowing the campus, getting to know kids outside the FC world etc.

I got waitlisted at Johns Hopkins but spring’d at UMd… I’m glad that makes sense, oh wait…

Not as bad as getting spring’d at UMD, waitlisted at Towson, and given 3k at Salisbury. Seriously, that makes no sense at all. My Towson and Salisbury applications were EXACTLY the same. I’m starting to think that they just teach a monkey to randomly pick applications out of a hat to accept. Oh, the monkey hopped up and down three times? $3,000 per year scholarship!

My son will be attending UM this fall. He also was spring deferred, we met with Anne (the FC advisor) yesterday and he was able to pick his classes. Anne is very helpful and will spend time with you answering all your questions. If you have not secured housing then I would get started on that. My son will be living at University Club…we also looked at the View but to us the $400 difference was just to much. Also I agree with the earlier posts about the admitted students open house, it is very helpful and will answer alot of your questions about the process.

bumping this thread and looking for experiences of former FC and Spring Admit students at UMD. S was notified of spring admission acceptance and, with UMD as his top choice, he is ambivalent. He’s happy that he didn’t get rejected outright, bummed about it not being a “clean” admission, uncertain about FC, etc.

Thanks in advance.

what is a terp?

My son did freshmen connection in the fall of 2009. It was a very positive experience for him. You have full access to all UMD facilities and can participate in all freshmen activities. The class sizes were very small, which actually made the transition from High School to College a positive one ( he received all A’s his Freshmen Connection Semester)! As far as socially he had no problems, he lived in The University Towers where there were at least a hundred (if not more) freshmen connection students. The downfall of that is you had to sign a 10 month lease so, although he received “on campus housing in spring” we could not accept it… he didn’t mind, he loved his apartment and roommates (all freshmen connection students)

Hi! I was also admitted to the spring term. UMD is my top choice and I really want to participate in the FC. My only thing is if I live off campus the whole yer I feel like Im missing out on the dorm experience. Is there anyway to only be off campus during the first semester then go to on campus housing? Or are the leases restrictive on that?

Also… I was looking online and it says apartments at the view (or w.e. it was) start at 600 is that 600 per person or split between the roommates?

An one more… What’s FC tuition in the past years?

Cost in the view is more than $600 per person.

If doing the FC check out The View for housing. They have a website online.

I guess I’m on the same boat here seeing as I also got Spring Semester. My biggest question is will I be able to take classes of my intended major since I’m placed into letters and Sciences and how much am I looking to pay if I do FC?

@justaverage010

That is absolutely ridiculous. A friend of an acquaintance last year got into Towson with 2 failed classes and no EC’s. There must be a glitch or something; if you got wait listed for JHU you should be offered Towson Honors. Although in all honesty you’re not missing out on much at TU haha.

Anyway, I’m feeling much better about this whole FC thing, and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna do it. It’ been really nice having this forum both for commiseration and factual info. I’ll be joining that terpnet thing once my account is approved, maybe we can arrange roommate stuff there?
