Chance of acceptance at Brown

My daughter who is going into her senior year of High School is very interested in Brown. She loved the school when we visted and is interested in engineering. Could you chance her? Here is her info: weighted GPA 103% unweighted about 98% . Our school doesnt use a 4.00 gpa but both grades are a 4.00 at least. ACT composite was 33. She has taken all AP glasses offered by our school and honors when school didnt offer AP. Has a passion for robotics and has been in club since 9th grade. She created a manual and constitution for the club and hopes it will be added to after she graduates. She has travelled all over East coast with the club to various competitions where they have won many awards. She has held a leadership role in that club as well as in The National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, English Honor Society, Science Honor Society(all service and academic based clubs) She is also in the international Club and the School Newspaper. She is a Girl Scout and is just finishing up her Gold Award( equal to the Boys Scouts eagle award). Her project is a concert to raise money for the local food bank. She has a part time job in a local ice cream store and she also tutors kids. She is an active member of our church and has been an altar server for nine years. She plays the piano an has partcipated in NYSSMA for the past 6 years and has scored outstanding on all of her performances. She loves to paint and draw and is considering Browns dual program with The Rhode Island school of design if accepted. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Being a woman interested in Engineering is a big plus for any Engineering program she is looking at, and Brown is a great place for her! (well rounded student, will love Brown’s well rounded atmosphere for engineering students)
You didn’t mention SATs, or where she is likely to be in class rank. Those will have some impact. (ie is there grade inflation and she is not in top 5% of class?) The fact that she has taken the “most challenging” curriculum is good.
Her serious involvement in the robotics, (showing she is truely interested in engineering, not just a “poser”. (Yes I see those, unfortunately: say they are interested in English Lit, when really premeds etc)) and her scouting will be her strongest ECs in my experience with Brown. And that she is well rounded.
I know you are proud of her. Hopefully she can connect with some of the women engineering students at Brown to visit, etc.
PS, Brown’s “dual program with RISD” is of 2 sorts: the new formal dual degree which requires special admission to both schools. That program would be honestly difficult to complete with an engineering concentration at Brown, although I think there is one student doing that currently. The second is just getting to take RISD classes as a Brown student when they can fit into scheduling (sometimes tricky).

Dear BrownAlumParent,
Thanks for your reply. Our school doesnt rank but when we asked the guidance dept they said she was somewhere between being in the top 5 to 10 % of her grade. Her SAT scores were low 1990- she does plan on retaking but how would it look if we just send ACT scores if she doesnt do any better on retake? Also any point in retaking ACT to see if she would score higher? Thanks for the advice about the RISD program. It was just an idea- art is something she enjoys so she thought it might be interesting but engineering -especially fields that will help her use her passion for robotics is what she hopes to make her career goal. Thanks again.

Brown accepts just ACT. Her ACT is much better than the SAT, so I’d send just that. The only reason to retake SAT is if she is applying to schools that need to see it, or for scholarship purposes. I think she would be better off forgetting the SAT and concentrating on the ACT.

Brown is very interested in female engineers, but they still have to show they are capable of doing the work and really interested in the subject. The Brown-RISD program is not really for students who enjoy art – applicants have to make a case for how they want to connect their art and their Brown concentration. For example, an illustration major at RISD, literary arts concentrator at Brown, wants to write/illustrate books.

Thanks for your advice. When we visted the school she did a day visit with one of the students and also received some good advice from her. She took an engineering class at our high school and got an A in the class. She also received an award for excellence in engineering by acheiving the highest grade of the students taking the class. She also is taking an intro to engineering class that Brown is offering online this summer and loves it. We will have her just send ACT.
