Could you please help out with a stressed out senior's fears?

I'm so worried that I won't get into Carleton...my interview wasn't amazing, and it might even be on the lackluster side. She didn't ask me many questions and she was constantly checking her phone for texts from her sick fiance. I basically spent an hour asking questions I made up on the fly...

Could you guys please give me some idea for my chances at Carleton?

I'm from Washington
Female
Asian
SAT: (superscore from three times... there weren't any dramatic increases)
Math- 750
Reading- 760
Writing- 750
Total: 2260, M+R = 1510
SAT II
Lit- 750
(I'm taking Math II again in December)

GPA: 3.786 UW (I'm mostly worried about this...)
AP's: Chem, Calc AB, Chinese, World History, Psychology
Senior AP's: Comp Gov, Bio, Stats, Art History, and Econ.

What I like to do with my free time:

Orchestra 9-12
XC 9-11
Track 9-10
Psychology Club 11-12 (I'm President)
Humane Society Club 11-12 (I'm President)
Autism Awareness Club 11-12 (Historian)
Work at Target! 12
Cheer 11
Honor Society 12
And I volunteered for 100+ Hours

And I can't give an unbiased assessment of my recs and essays.

I don’t think you should worry about it too much. Everything seems fine and whatever happens, happens so don’t stress on it and enjoy your senior year! (:

Same, I wouldn’t worry too much, I think you’ve got solid stats all around. Personally, I had a lower GPA than you (3.71 by the end of senior year), and I was still accepted. At this point, it’s best to just sit back and wait. If you get any new grades this 1st semester that will increase your GPA even more, go ahead and send those new ones in, it definitely won’t hurt. Good luck! :)

Great stats. Why Carleton ?

Thanks guys! That’s reassuring. I’ve been looking at accepted student profiles, and they all seem super duper amazing to me. I guess I will try to stop thinking about it and stop worrying. However, I still think Carleton is a reach for me. To answer your question Axelrod, Carleton is an amazing school. Not only are the academics top notch, the students are really friendly and are genuinely curious and passionate about what they learn. I think I would fit in with the community there. Also, I’ve heard great things from alums and I resonate with their mission statement.

I don’t think that the interview has too much impact on your admissions chances unless it’s really terrible, which it doesn’t sound like yours was. In fact, I think just requesting an interview also reflects positively on your interest in the school. So I wouldn’t stress too much.

From a stats perspective, you’re definitely a qualified student and you should have a good shot at admission. I wouldn’t say that anyone is guaranteed admission - Carleton is competitive and every year there are some surprises - but I honestly think you should feel pretty good about your chances. You’re definitely a strong applicant and if your love for Carleton showed through in your application, I think they’d look at you favorably.

Feel free to message me with any other questions about Carleton!

I’ll definitely take you up on that kind gesture. And your post definitely helped a lot with the stress I’ve had lately about Carleton. Thank you so much!

Dear Soy,
You look like a very qualified applicant. You have done everything you can with your application, interview and ECs. Maybe the anxiety you are feeling is the result of being finished with everything for the application that is in your control. Now all of your hard work moves along to the admissions committee. The best thing to do is to accept the expertise of the adcom. If you are truly an excellent match for the school, you will jump right off that application into their hearts and they will be happy to welcome you in the fall.

Wings-

Thanks for replying to this thread. Your answer is really reassuring. I’ll try not to think about it now that everything’s out of my hands.

Yes, please try to relax! Senior year–especially this part of it–can be overwhelming if you allow it to be. Have you already submitted your application? If not, make sure your enthusiasm for the school comes across in the “Why Carleton?” question (if the app still has that question, like it used to).

If you have already submitted it, congratulations! You’re ahead of many applicants who will be waiting until the last minute.

I submitted it in early October!

Update:

I checked my class rank, and I think it’ll ruin my chances at Carleton. My school is extremely competitive, and it’s 3rd in the state. I’m 101/452 in my class. Aka top 22 percent. Are my chances for being a Carl out of the window?

If this helps at all, my school is going to stop doing class rank starting with the class of 2014. Also, we’re in the top 100 high schools nationally. I know over 90% of Carls are in the top 10%, but I recall seeing that half of the applicants come from high schools that don’t rank. Can anyone confirm or refute this?

You’d be better off asking your college counselor how students of similar class rank at your high school have fared at Carleton (or look it up on Naviance/a similar website if your school uses it).

Did you apply ED? There’s still a chance to apply ED II, in fact, if you know that it is your first choice. If you’ve already submitted the application then you can call the admin’s office and ask to move your app to the ED II pool. I think that, if anything, that’ll give the bigger boost.

I’m really tempted to do just that. However, I can’t because of financial reasons.

you are most competitive. apply elsewhere RD now. pick out schools who are not saturated with topflight Asians, which most are now according to todays NYTimes, so the colleges want diversity not 100% Asian populace. check out top, Carleton competitive, schools with small asian populations so they don’t hold this against you.

here’s a few: swarthmore, WUSTL, Washington & Lee, Emory, Pomona, Reed, Middlebury, William & Mary, perhaps in Twin Cities’ Macalester which as a five year plan with WUSTL, Amherst, Williams. numbers game. then go larger campuses.

it’s just wrong that some one like you has to worry at all. wishing you the best.

hey! I feel you - I applied EDII and I’m freaking out because I fell in love with Carleton when I visited in October. i just wanted to wish you luck but also advise that you let Carleton know your interviewer sucked haha. I would be really turned off of the school if my interviewer was as rude as yours was in checking her phone instead of listening to you. I had a weird first interview too, on campus with a senior who was really sweet but slightly awkward, so I called the school up and asked if I could retake the interview. now i’ve been told that the interview hardly matters, but the admissions office sounded really happy to know that I cared enough about Carleton to want to put my best foot forward. i was asked if the request is because of a flaw on their part, and i would just tell them your story. it will give you some piece of mind (:

I would forget about the less-than-stellar interview. They aren’t that important at most schools. Ds2’s worst interview this fall easily was for his EA school, and he was accepted anyway.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Cornelia! I’m pretty much done with college apps right now, but the funny thing is I already applied to a lot of the schools you listed  I’ll try to apply to more schools with smaller Asian populations.

Kanjea, that’s really good advice. Do you think that admissions is back in the office right now? I’m also a little concerned since my interview happened quite a while ago (two months?). Should I still call?

@Youdon’tsay
Congrats on Ds2’s acceptance! It’s really encouraging to hear that the interview doesn’t weigh too heavily.
