Counseling

Hey guys, Has anyone gone to their college counseling? I am scared to go because I know i’m going to break out tears and basically all of my emotions are going to come out and even though that’s what they are there for, I still hate the feeling of being weak. Also has the college counseling help?

Go! Don’t worry about being weak, better to cry and get your emotions out in a place where people are trained to deal with it, rather than have a break down in an inappropriate place or somewhere where you will feel embarrassed if it happens. Like everything in life, counseling works when you participate fully and follow the recommendations. If you don’t take it seriously, it may or may not help as much.

I went. Like you, I found it to be a kind of nerve-wracking prospect (and I did cry, lol). But it isn’t that bad! The counselor I saw was very nice. She was able to refer me to a community practitioner so I could seek long-term help. People have different experiences, and while not everyone finds talk therapy helpful, I recommend trying it out. At the very least, you should be able to find more resources for seeking other forms of help.

I had the same fear going into counselling. I have some weird psychological thing where I cry every time I open up to someone, lol. I literally cried in every session I had with my therapist. And sometimes I did feel stupid and weak for it, but I realized that I could either face my aversion to being vulnerable and get past it, or I could try to pretend that I could handle things on my own and have nothing get better. If talking to someone is really therapeutic for you (it’s not for everyone, and it depends on the therapist too), it’s not something you have to rely on forever. The point is to help you process and cope with things on your own. It really helped me; it’s worth a shot.
