Hello,

I applied for early action to Michigan, and my guidance counselor mistakenly sent 4 teacher recs and 1 additional rec without my consent. I only wanted her to send 2 with 1 additional.

My regional rep told me in a college meeting that sending many recs is discouraged. I am worried now that this misstep may get me rejected. I am an otherwise very qualified applicant (2300+, top 5% strong essays). Should I contact Michigan or my regional rep to ask them to only consider 2 recs, or is this overkill?

Please advise! Thanks.

How can your counselor send the teacher recs? Are you not the one determining how many recs are sent via the common app? Or is your school doing things manually?

At any rate, there is no problem with sending more recommendations that requested. A university will never reject a student on those grounds. They will merely choose to ignore whatever recommendations they do not need.

By the way, Michigan allows four teacher recommendations and two additional recommendations, so technically speaking, you are within the limit of what is accepted.

Do not contact Michigan for this. It won’t make a good impression as they would expect you to know what I stated above. All you need to do now, assuming Michigan has received all your documents (you can call the University to ask if they have received everything they need), is wait.

Oh! I thought Michigan does not like additional letters and did not submit my letters during the application. Can I send two additional letters (two companies i interned) to UMich now ? Thanks

By the way, my school sent 2 teacher letters and 1 counselor letter.
