extra letter of rec?

I have a little bit of a dilemma here. I know Michigan only asks for 1 teacher recommendation and 1 counselor one. BUT, I have ones from 2 different teachers that I really like, and I don't know which one to choose. My counselor's isn't very good (I mean, it was a nice letter, but she isn't very intelligent, and, needless to say, it came out sounding that way). I guess the bottom line is, would it be ok to send 1 extra teacher letter of rec., or would that only hurt my chances? I'm already attaching a resume to my app, and I don't want to overload them with paperwork, but I do want to make it as strong as possible.

You should just send one, especially if they say just about the same thing. Whether you liked them or not isn't really the issue. If they ask for one, they're looking forward to reading one. Hopefully, other things on your app will be more meaningful in a way that sending an extra one shouldn't even help at all.

I would just send one -- and choose the teacher who might say something unique about you. It's not a big deal if your counselor rec isn't well written. The Admissions Office probably has experience with recs from your counselor and will know what to expect.

ok, thanks, I'll just send one then. If they don't accept me based off of one rec, then it just wasn't meant to be.

So my daughter is in a panic right now about this very subject. If they are asking for one they only mean one, yes? Is it considered an annoyance if a student submits an extra one?

one counselor and one teacher. i agree with those who responded to my post: unless there is a very clear reason for sending an additional letter (eg, an unfortunate circumstance or challenge is revealed), i'd keep it to what they asked for.

Sigh... this is so confusing and we are in a rush because I am going into the hosp tomorrow and my s has to take care of the younger kids while I'm gone. One rec speaks about outstanding impact on the school and community as well as outside research and the other deals with making up 9 lost weeks of IB work at school due to emergency surgery in junior year. Which is the best one or should we take a chance and send both?

Gosh this process is stressful!
Thanks in advance!

the teacher letter should include the medical issue, while the counselor letter should speak about the school and community, IMO. hope that helped.

We're having this same discussion -- DS has two teacher recs (one a math/science, one a humanities, as most of his schools ask for) and two supplemental recs from professors with whom he has worked, all of whom will have very different things to say. If one is invited to Honors/LSA or for consideration for merit money, will Admissions ask for more recommendations? Does the department/school ask for more info?

Rather than asking teachers for additional letters later, DS and I are thinking we should get letters from all four, send one to with his app and hold the others in reserve. Does this make sense? The letters will all be sealed and signed by the teachers/profs-- our school doesn't send out teacher recs, so we will need to hold on to them.

Counting: I think you should send one, and save the rest, though they do specifically ask for one teacher recommendation (and there is a separate evaluation they have to send out). BC of this, I think you should get one from a hs teacher, since they specified what they wanted. Keep the rest in case honors, etc. asks for them. Good luck!

I'm kind of mad because I asked a three teachers for recs and my guidance counselor was just going to send one but each teacher individually sent their rec on their own despite my request to give them directly to my counselor.....so yeah, three teacher recs.
