i'm confused...there's only 1 form for a counselor/teacher recommendation. and since usc only wants us to send one recommendation, does that mean we can send either only one teacher rec or one counselor rec? I don't know my counselor at all and I was wondering if I could just give 2 of my teachers recommendations

My S sent in 3 recs--one from his physics teacher, one from econ & one from the college counselor. He was accepted by USC engineering.

I sent in two teacher and one counselor rec also, using the same form for all three.

is it required to get a counselor recommendation for USC???

^ I believe so. I did although i didn't like my counselor because the form told me to...

is it? it only says teacher or counselor rec required.

i hope it's teacher OR counselor... my class is pretty big and i've visisted my couselor so many times throughout high school.... she doesnt really seem to remember me D:

neshioes - don't worry about the counselor rec being impersonal. My son was in the same situation and got in (now a USC senior!). Colleges understand that in very large schools, the counselor can't get to know the students. Hopefully, the teachers do know them and write good letters.

i'm only going to send in one counselor rec and one teacher rec...because i only have two close teachers and one of them is also my counselor

my school sucks

never mind...i can only send one rec now because my other teacher broke her arm and she's been so busy trying to recover and i dont wanna bother her.

am i going to be penalized?

^ASK ANOTHER TEACHER! i think sending one is going to give you a disadvantage.

My counselor thought I was suicidal and she still wrote me a recommendation. i don't know what it said but i got in so it couldn't have been that bad. haha.

yeah, but since i'm in this college/hs dual enrollment program, i only have two teachers that i really know since all the rest are college professors and i alternate them 15 weeks at a time

how could i be disadvantaged by sending one when they only require one?

Do you know ANY teachers well--including any you had last year as a JR or any of the profs? It's always helpful for them to have several perspectives about you, if the individual says they can write a positive rec (otherwise, don't bother).

well all the profs i've had i only knew for 1 semester each because i haven't taken any twice. yeah i would go to the office hours sometimes but i wasn't in the place to suck up to them because i was kinda relying on my other teachers to do recs for me. the most the profs could do is say that "he did well in my class" i can't imagine them providing many perspectives about me except my schoolwork, and i doubt that they'll have much detail on that anyways except that it was good...

um..the teacher i already got to do it for me has known me for three years, (had my two older brothers for 4 consecutive years before me). she has this whole thought out plan to write my rec that she explained to me. First, she's going to go into depth on the dual enrollment program i'm in. 2nd, she's going to cite specific instances on how i exceled in her class. lastly, she's going to detail the 2 jobs i've had during the schoolyear and my other ECs and community service.

i don't know my other counselor at all. as in, i just got a new one this semester and i haven't met her yet.

my other teacher broke her arm and hasn't been at school this week yet, but she'll be back next monday. she originally said that we need to request her to do a rec for us 2 weeks in advance, and that would have been last monday. i'm sure that since she was absent, she'll crank one out for me in a week. but i think that since she's so busy it will be overwhelming and not a lot of effort will be put into it and because she doesn't have that much time to do it.

Sounds like the letter you'll be getting from this one teacher will cover nearly everything & knock the socks off the admissions committees! Good luck--should be great!

so how many recs do we need any by who? i'm still not clear on this..

all you're required to have is one from a teacher OR one from a counselor. however, it's encouraged to have more than one if the additional recommender can bring something to light that is special about you.

ok, that's a relief (especially since i've only asked one teacher and it's past the deadline at my school to ask a teacher/counselor for one). also, do you know if it's typical for a teacher to consult with a counselor or principal when writing my letter? the rec asks for questions like if ive even been suspended and my course load...questions my teacher may not know despite knowing me.

I'm just sending the counselor rec.

AzNChoiBoi8: I think it varies from school to school so you can't really say. some teachers are fine with just asking you for info so they can fill it out which is how it is at my school. but at other schools they would probably consult with student's records which they get probably from the counselors
