Counselors Rant

Does anyone else have problems with their counselors? I’m a senior in high school, and my friends and I are applying to multiple schools through QuestBridge regular, and our counselors have made applying to schools much more difficult to them. This is long, but I think it’s pretty funny lol.

To start, we live in a big public school in GA, and I understand there’s a lot of students to take care of… but it’s kind of been ridiculous. My two friends have this counselor, and at the beginning of the year we needed our transcripts mailed to our schools and their counselor said " (the name of our county) County Public schools" does not allow counselors to send transcripts to colleges. She would repeatedly say that, and my friends couldn’t get their transcripts sent on time, she had to ask another counselor (who complained… but nevertheless did them)

Then as we are rushing to get our new transcripts sent and the QB midyear report, their same counselor tells my friend she can’t send her midyear report because “our county doesn’t allow counselors to send any type of personal information to colleges.” She literally repeated, “I’m not allowed to send these.” “I will get fired.” and I sat there kind of smirking at myself because my counselor said he will do mine, but my dumb ass got caught when she saw me smirking and said, “I’m going to emphasize this to ALL of the counselors that we can’t send transcripts.” and She said “oh maybe we can mail them”, and she tried to open my friend’s already sealed and official transcripts and shove the midyear reports in.

While my other friend, (the same counselor LOVES him) got his done the first week when we came back from school, while my friend is still just trying to schedule an appointment with her counselor. She tells this student, “OMG you didn’t get the QB match, it’s my fault, you should have got into Dartmouth!” But she could care less about my other friend. Every time she comes in the counselor’s office, they tell her to wait and all the counselors give attitude. And that same counselor doesn’t like me AT ALL, because I’m always with my friend and my friend is way too nice to tell the counselor that she is wrong, but I sometimes add some comments with a tad bit of attitude back. aha.

So we were in her office, and I was helping my friend with her transcripts, and another counselor comes in and they start complaining, talking about how much work they have to do (they do this all the time, they pick up their phone and start talking while we are in there, openly complain, ect). They were whispering about how many complaints they get. The counselors asked us to leave, and most likely were talking about us (ME) lol I give so much shade to the counselors, I try not to be rude but they are so rude and this is our college applications, this matters to us. “this is so much work!” the counselor said once when my friend told her she had to send a counselor recommendation to all of her 12 QuestBridge schools. I told her (with low key shade) “You can just submit the same one.” and the counselor glares at me and says, “I know.”.

Anyways, my friend’s counselor literally thinks our county won’t allow them to send transcripts to schools. That makes absolute no sense. My counselor already explained that as long as it’s sent to a credible email, it’s fine. But then when I went to see my counselor today, he gave me back my midyear report I gave to him to send to my schools, and he told me he refuses to send it because he already sent transcripts. I asked what if my schools required them, he replied, “Since you chose so many schools, choose your favorite and just email them.” ??? I didn’t apply to 13 amazing schools just to forget about them lol.

But anyways, they sent my friend away again today, because her counselor was “tied up”. They all seem overwhelmed, and yes I get. Being a counselor must be stressful, but they don’t have to take it out on students. They also give wrong information to us, my friend’s counselor tried to argue with her that on our transcripts that is our UW, (although it clearly has the 10 points added to AP classes). UGH idk, it’s just so much work when I have to do extra work like email my schools to ask about requirements when my counselor was supposed to just send it.

Once my counselor told me to come back the next day, and I did he said, “remind me who you are again?”

Anyways, my friend still doesn’t have her midyear reports sent, LOL. It’s been 3 weeks.

Thoughts? Stories?

Im a junior but I can tell dealing with counselors as a senior will be a nightmare. I go to a large school (3000 students), and our counselors definitely do not know our names. In addition, we are heavily discouraged from attending out of state schools.

My friends and I have weekly rant sessions about our GC, sometimes multiple times a day. Transcripts are always lost. I literally had to walk her through the Common App forms. Nothing ever gets sent. Never there when you need them. Now that it’s time for midyear reports I’m literally stuck. I take DE classes, so I have to wait for the district to send class codes. It’s not my counselor’s fault, it’s the district’s, but I know my counselor would forget if I don’t remind her. So I can’t send my midyear transcript until the district sends the class code because otherwise, I won’t get credit.

Please don’t antagonize your counselors. They are especially busy this time of year, so the best approach is to be direct, yet polite. I’m also from GA, and go too a very large public school, so I know that it can be frustrating when the counselors take a long time (it took my counselor two months to fill out his commonapp portion, mainly because the office lost my request :expressionless: ). That being said, from what I’m getting from your perspective, your counselors are being unnecessarily rude. I don’t know any county that does not counselors allow to send transcripts unless they are not electronic in which case it is the student’s responsibility to send it out themselves. Senior years almost over, so just toughen it out and be as nice as you can.

@Meganerd2012 I’m not bothering my counselors, I don’t talk to any of them besides mine. They call me in. When I said slight attitude, I mean slight to the point where no one else can tell I’m annoyed besides me. I understand they are busy and stressed, I expressed that, but that is their job. We just want to get into good colleges, but counselors make it more difficult for us. We have to make appointments with them, and sometimes they never get back to us. I just wanted to rant, I wasn’t going to complain or anything.

@vasa17

I get that. Just don’t let them stress you out too much; senior year is supposed to be enjoyable too (and not just about college). Have you expressed your concerns to your parents? Sometimes the counselors will listen to them more.

You live and Georgia and get the 10 points added for AP classes too?? Maybe we live in the same county lmao

That sounds so irritating tbh. I don’t really understand why they can’t send in transcripts and midyear report, especially if they are required. Its definitely hard to be a counselor but I dislike those counselors who don’t seem to care about their students futures and colleges. Ive only spoken to my counselor once so I hope she’s not like that lol

@neonerudite seeing your posts, it seems we might live in same county! Haha and I see your applying to USC and other schools through QB! That’s great! Feel free to talk to me, I did quest bridge as well.
