AF6872 and some others got me wondering about something.

How do USNA and other SAs "count" NCAA football recruits?

As noted on another thread, Coach Ken Numismaticokacola (Sorry Coach!) was quoted that USNA was bringing in 28 recruits directly from HS and that another "30 - 35 recruits" were being sent to NAPS. And would it be fair to assume that a substantial # of NAPS recruits who are there now, will be coming into the Class of 2013 this summer? And as we all know, none receive athletic grants-in-aid.

Can anyone explain how NAVY and the other SAs playing Div I athletics, and notably football, "counts" these recruited athletes? Are many deemed "walk-ons?" Are some designated as "scholarship" athletes?

What I have been told is that each coach sits down with a liason to the admissions board, they tell them a category which the recruit is valued at. I don't know the official names for all of them but they are basically:
Would be nice to have
Could make an impact on the team
We want them on the team
Bluechip - slang for highly desireable athlete being pursued on a highly national scale All-Americans and such

They tell the liasion what they know about you and the liasion goes to the admissions board representing the athletes file and putting input to the board as per the coaches wishes

If you are officially recruited then you are not considered a walk-on however, being a recruit does not guarentee you a spot on the team

Again I can not vouch for 100% accuracy, but as a recruited athlete to both USNA and USMA this is what I have been told as to the process
