Couple of general questions

I have heard something about a cooking dorm? What does that mean? Each dorm has a kitchen in it? How do I get into one of these dorms?

Let's say I do want to go to honors college but my grades as an incoming freshman aren't good enough. If I do really good as a freshman in Stony Brook well I get into honors college for sophomore year?

Is there a difference between going to honors from freshman year and going to honors from sophomore year?

On the website it says I need 4 math classes for engineering. Does computer science count as engineering?

What is the difference between going to honors college and regular admission?

Would you recommend Stony Brook for computer science?

What happens if I don't get in to the major I want? Can I try again sophmore year if my grades are good freshman year? Do I have to do a fifth year of college to make up for not being in the major freshman year?

I also heard there's something else honors. Like there's the honors college and the honors blank. What is this other thing and what's the difference?

For your question about computer science, it depends on the school. While most high schools list it as a math I believe, some colleges don’t accept comp sci as a “true” mathematics course. On the flip side, some colleges only see it as a science.

Honors college is often described as an extension of the school you go to, in which you only room and have classes with other honors students. At Penn State, for example, the honors college gets the best dorms on campus and first pick in a load of stuff. The classes might be a little more challenging because you’re with a stronger group of students.

I haven’t heard of anyone doing a fifth year of college. Most schools have you declare your major at the beginning of sophomore year, but Stanford lets you wait as late as the beginning of junior year, I think. You can also switch majors and double-major, if you’re up for the challenge. I think everyone has to graduate after 4 years though.

Sorry I couldn’t answer all of your questions; I don’t know anything about Stony Brook.
Hope this helps.

Cooking dorms have a kitchen either on the end of each floor for corridor style dorms or in each suite for suite style dorms. You can specify if you would like to be in a cooking dorm on the housing application after matriculation, and there is one cooking dorm per quad.

Stony Brook has the Honors College and the University Scholars program. The Honors College is much more competitive, with 60 kids in each class attending out of 4000 applicants to the program alone. We live in a separate dorm in Tabler Quad and are exempt from the DEC system (gen eds) which is replaced by small Honors seminars during the 4 years. If you aren’t admitted as a freshman, a few are admitted in sophomore and junior years, and they are exempt from the seminars from the years that they were not in the HC. Otherwise, you take all of the same classes as everybody else for your desired major.

Scholars is a much less competitive program that you are selected for, you do not apply. There are around 300 of those students and they dorm all over campus. They have to follow the DEC system.

The Stony Brook Comp Sci program is really great and well known. They are currently building a brand new Comp Sci building.
