????Couple of Question about SBU

Hi, so im still thinking about my college decision ...Stony Brook is where I think ill end up though (Computer Science major)

Sorry some of my questions might be a bit random..

Is there wifi in dorms?
What are dorms that I should try to get in and what are some dorms that I should totally avoid???
How is the gym?fitness center? Pool? I like to play some bball for fun and maybe swim or work out..
Is there some sort of Russian community at SBU, a lot of Eastern Europeans? Im just wondering, obviously im Russian
For those who are majoring in Computer Science, is the major difficult?? i know its not a very smart question but i mean just tell me how much does a person have to study, free time, etc..
How are the professors?
How is freshman year?
Is it tough to get A's, what I mean is, are grades deflated?
I know the university is diverse but do the ethnic groups just stick together??

In most science classes it is tough to get an A. I won’t lie, you need to bust your butt. I can’t tell you about Comp Sci but it all depends on what you want to do. Do you just want to pass or stand out? I think you know what I am about to say next. Yes there is a Russian Club. There is a gym in every quad, in the sac, and sports complex. They have a pool too but the pool has select hrs due to swim team practice and classes. Some dorms have wi-fi, while some do not. Depends though but they are trying to install wi-fi everywhere.

there is no wifi, you must use a cable (hence sharing internet unless you buy a splitter in a triple) in the dorm

get into roth quad - it has Air Conditioning and heat adjustments

gym is always available

they arent so great

freshman year is the worse year, tripling up, bad classes with little attention due to huge classes

A’s arent hard to get when I was there, everyone cut class and I showed up and easily got A’s because everyone did horrible

ethnic groups tend to stick together, so u will have to engage

The Compsci program is quite good, plenty of opportunities for research and good interns.

They’re working on installing wifi in the dorms; I know they piloted it in a couple of buildings recently.

Can’t we just bring our own wifi routers for our rooms?

Nope. Well, in theory you could, but this year the network security got put on steroids and in an attempt to kick wireless routers off the system ended up repeatedly bringing down whole chunks of the residential network. So if you don’t mind your entire dorm hating you because you brought the wrath of flawed security attempts upon them and cut off everyone’s internet access, sure.

Oh, that’s cool.

Привет!
I am Russian as well, and have almost all the same questions as you )))
My dad worked at BNL for 9 years and we have a lot of Russian friends from around Long Island, so there is a Russian community more or less (im sure you know that if you are from the area).
Comp Sci is very good there, four of our close family friends from Russia (we are all from Dubna, Moscow region) went there for comp sci, and a few to physics / math. They all felt challenged, they all had classes where you can not attend and get a good grade… just like half the colleges in the US.
They also say you need to know the right people and right professors / classes (duh :p)
I got into a few other places - WPI, RPI, Northeastern, BU… but we cannot afford any of that, and I know that Stony Brook is no worse in terms of education than all those places… The only thing is that Northeastern and BU are in Boston, and the middle of Long Island is not Boston )) BUT you can just take the train… when I spent my summers at BNL a train ride is never too painful, if you are with buddies it passes by fast.
Hope to see you on campus!
Удачи!

ha hey what a coincidence…thanks
I’m set on going to SBU next year, but lol I have no idea how the area is like but hopefully everything will go alright

What college do you think you are going to be in?
I am doing computer science as well and got into the Science and Society college.
Where about are you from? (in the motherland?) and im guessing you arent from Long Island?

Idk I just filled my preferences soo idk, but i put the Science and Society college as a 5 (“very interested”)…ill be happy as long as im not in Kelly or Roosevelt quad(i only heard bad things about them)
I’m from a city right under Moscow called Podolsk and yeah right now I live in Buffalo,NY
where u from?

Yea i kno Podolsk  never been there but kno some ppl from it and heard about it.
I am from Dubna (1.5 hours north of moscow) and atm im in Acton MA… ****ty place :/

do any buildings in roth have wifi?
