HS sophmore - looking for a educated idea of things

bear with me for the longness of the post pleasee:P.

Ok well as the title states im a sohpmore in highschool(patchogue-medford on long island) and i intend to 95% major in computer science, very very possibly at stony brook, however there are a few things i wish to clarify WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE CURRENTLY AT, OR HAVE BEEN VERY RECENTLY at stony brook, not some disgtruntled undergraduate from 5 years ago - no offence :P.

-ok well as you may or may not realize im very close to sbu, about 25 minutes away, however i REFUSE to spend my college years living at home with my parents, the least i would accept is renting out an apartment- me and some guys you know ect... is it worth it to dorm at stony brook? assuming moneys no object(which we all know it is, but lets pretend here) is it worth it to dorm instead of just drive the 20-25 minutes.

-this is for computer science majors, i know the CS major is suppose to be rigerous- do most employers realize this and will the degree be respected or am i better off applying to like binghampton or upping my effort and applying to cornell or something.
are most people stereotype and i hate to say this "nerd" in the computer science major, cause although im very profeciant with computers im also a competetive sub.wrestler and contact martial artist and can be very social, eaither way it doesnt bother me i just dont want to spend my entire college experience with a mob of fairly unsocial boys.

-since iev already said i know how to socialize, is the student life at stonybrook really THAT bad? i mean iev read mixed things with more of those things leaning towards yes its that bad, but i dont need some rant to tell me that, i want someone whose there to tell me that, now im not antisocial and i can get out there and make freinds without too much trouble but REALLY, a down to earth responce without bias or a cheerleader from the school(and be honest here guys this question really matters to me) the social situation as a whole isnt dependent entirely on the individual is it suckish in general or not. whether or not im an exception to the antisocialness.

-im pretty sure thats all i wanted to know, i guess as a bonus if anyone is truly against recomending the school which schools in new york/new jerersy or even florida actually. could you recommend for comp. science

kk, thanks in advance for reading, i know it was a tedious read.

I can answer one of your quest. Dorming is convenient because of exams. Exams are typically in the evenings and as a result, it is helpful to stay on campus so that you can just walk home after your exam. Plus, during finals week, it is easier if you have multiple finals in a day or a final the next day. It just helps to reduce the added stress.

Dorming overall depends heavily on your roommates and suite mates. If they suck, then your experience will not be that pleasant. Take it from a person who has experienced it first hand. Best advice is to pick a good roommates that won't bug you at night and will respect you as a person, your privacy, and your sleep.

Well as an incoming Freshman I can tell you some things I have heard, and seen. It doesn't matter what you are majoring in, you will find friends. I am also majoring in Cs and I am very social. I have already made tons of friends, and some enemies at Stony Brook. I already have 2 preferred roomates, and everything seems fun. There is a lot of parties and stuff. Do not listen to those kids who say that there is no social life there. I am friends with kids who have been there already and they say it's really fun. You need to make your own fun, not let it come to you. There are parties Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

I also agree you should dorm. College is not the same if you commute. You go to class, and leave, boring... It gives you real world experience, and lets you get a step into the world. If you live with your parents you don't get that. There are a ton of commuters, that is why people say there is nothing to do. 50% commute, which is about 10 thousand kids. So there are still 10 thousand kids to say with. There are a lot of activities, and you said you do sports, that is great too.

I would recommend sb for you. Besides being a top Cs school, 14th in the country, it is very cheap, and very close for you. I am going in as well, and their facilities are nice, and there are very nice professors. I met up with the gaming professor, and he seemed really chill.

You should be fine with whatever you pick, but you have 2 years to decide. I suggest you do apply early, which schools like, because it makes it seem you like it. Apply for a lot of scholarships, and do good. I hope I answered everything, if not most. If you have any other questions, please pm me, and I will try to help you out with it.

Have a good night,
