Couple of questions

I am applying and will hopefully get into
Albany
Binghamton
Buffalo
Stony Brook

In what order do they rank, and how do they compare to a under grad that would be considered "great" for pre med or pre dental.

Is there any greek life at any of these schools?, can you rank them in terms of greek life and give ratings ex: 0/10 - 10/10

Which school would you advise a student who wants to have a good time at college as well as get into medical school to go to?

Thanks.

If you are looking for a strong pre-med program, greek program and a school that student’s actually enjoy I would apply to Geneseo.

NYKnicks – Why do you want to apply only to the four SUNY research universities? As Geneseograd noted, you can get what you are looking for at the SUNY colleges also.

As to how they are ranked, I think the common perception is that Binghamton is #1, followed by Stony Brook, Buffalo and Albany. Buffalo has many partisans, however, who would argue that Buffalo is actually #2, or even #1. As for comparing with “great” undergraduate colleges I’ll take a pass. As I will with greek life. It was only recently that I became aware of the large number of greek organizations at Geneseo, and that was only due to the lawsuit arising over the death last year of a student due to binge drinking.

I will say this wherever you end up – if having a good time partying while you are in college is too high a priority it is doubtful you’ll end up as a competitive med school candidate.

The death of a student last year was really a wake-up call not to just Geneseo but all college campuses. The fraternity that hosted that party was not a fraternity recognized by the college and one that was well-known by students for heavy drinking.

Drinking and partying occurrs on all college campuses but what I always found at Geneseo was that it was in moderation for the most part. Because of the work-load at Geneseo and academic environment it is perfectly acceptable to stay-in on a weekend to study for exams. Students who do well at Geneseo especially in the sciences must put in a lot of time.

There are other things to do at Geneseo including being a member of a Greek Organization that doesn’t have to involve heavy drinking.

They have a very strong science program and med school placement results.

Recognized greek life at Geneseo will be abolished in the next 5 years anyways.

The college wants to be officially recognized at the state’s honors college, and from what I understand, the state will not bestow this honor upon Geneseo unless greek life is no longer apart of the college.

With the recent events, opponents to Greek life have become more influential. I also heard that the administration has mixed feelings on greek life i.e some important college officials support it, some don’t. Therefore, its basically a match of tug o war.

Greek life at Geneseo is joke anyways. I love the open parties, but the houses are not your typical frat/sorority houses that you would find at most other colleges. Also, very few greek organizations actually do community service, which is a key component of a frat/sorority.

Stony Brook is usually considered the best SUNY for the sciences. However, it’s not for everyone…it’s a big commuter school. Bing is usually ranked highest of your group with Buffalo and then Albany. Albany has a big party rep.

You might want to consider New Paltz too, they have a good biology dept. and a much better location.

I think you can get there from any of the above and alot depends on which school you like the most and would be happy attending for four years. Have you decided on a major yet? If you change your mind about medical/dental school, as many do, which school has other programs that are interesting to you? UB offers many combined degrees, but the others may as well.

Is UB the only one of these schools that also has a medical and dental school? My D is pre-pharm there but has has many friends who are pre-chiro, med and dental. They’re taking many of the same courses this year. If it’s anything like the pre-pharmacy program, I’m sure they are meticulous in preparing kids for the application process and they are very strong in the sciences overall. The advising is first rate, the coursework is demanding, and there are numerous opportunities for students to do research, volunteer, shadow, work with an alumni mentor and prep for the MCAT/DAT, apps, interviews, etc. If you aren’t going to do the honors program, I recommend the health professions LLC or one of the undergraduate academies. There’s so much to choose from at UB that it helps to have some direction and guidance early on.

There is greek life at UB, I believe it is centered around South Campus, although I don’t know much about it. There are so many events, clubs, etc. at UB and in the city of Buffalo that it shouldn’t be a problem finding a good time…when you have time for it!
