Couple questions about life at UC Santa Cruz

Hey there, im hoping some of my questions don't come off as rude or anything, but i really want to know.

So first and foremost, how is the partying at UC Santa Cruz? I mean drinking-wise, not smoking bud. Frat house parties? etc

Also, kind of embarrassing question buuuut, are there really a lot of lesbians all over campus? which leads me to my next question...Are there good looking girls at UCSC? I know its hard to generalize, but it's like saying ucsb has lots of attractive girls and uc irvine doesnt. Just curious.

And finally, an academic related question (yay)! Is UC Santa Cruz looked down upon out of all the UC's? And if i want to transfer to a different school for my masters degree, does it make it harder since i wouldnt be going to a top notch school like Berkley or UCLA?

Thanks

Hey, freshman here. Hope I can help you out a little.

Partying in Santa Cruz is actually really fun. The only real drinking that happens on campus are in the apartments and really low key in the dorms. The CSO’s (which are basically like wandering RAs) are pretty strict on the drinking policy on university housing property, and will write you up for it if you’re being too loud. The fun times are off campus at house parties and the like. As the school grows, more student-run social organizations are being established and they throw pretty big parties about once a month downtown. Have you considered going Greek? Most of the fraternities and sororities on campus host social events at least once a week that are always fun.

Don’t be embarassed! UCSC is very gay friendly and you’ll find a lot of gays and lesbians around campus. The girls here are cute, but we’re no SDSU or UCSB. It really depends on your taste.

Not sure what you mean by “looked down on”. If you’re asking if going to UCSC will somehow impede you from getting into a good grad school then definitely not. To my knowlege, if you excel here, you will be looked at in the same regard as most of the other applicants.

Partying is difficult here, to be honest. Most of the parties take place downtown and are broken up within an hour or two. The cops have nothing better to do than ruin the fun of college students. It’s not worth the trek to go to a downtown party unless you know it’s going to be lowkey. Frats aren’t big, and therefore, I feel like their parties are “exclusive” to Greek members only. You can try and have a party in your dorm room but most people get written up (sadly, I got written up for the first time on Saturday by the CSOs for partying in my dorm). Most people go to the woods or field to drink and smoke because it’s hard to get caught out there (it’s dark and nobody really patrols out there at night), and if a CSO happens to catch you, it’s easy to run away. You can’t run away if you get caught inside a dorm.

I know that UCSC is gay friendly but I’m not sure of the percentage. I’m a straight girl, but from what I’ve seen, there are a lot of pretty girls here. Yeah, UCSC isn’t full of beautiful people like UCSB, but there are lots of different people here and the diversity is nice and refreshing.

UCSC is often looked down upon because it’s seen as one of the easier UCs to get into, but people take that for granted–I know lots of people who were rejected from here, and acceptance rates are going down. UCSC is really underrated; just because it’s not as well known or prestigious as other schools doesn’t mean that the quality of education isn’t as great. Do you mean transferring…as an undergraduate? It’s harder to transfer to a UC if you’re coming from another UC campus. But if you’re talking about attending grad school (which is what I feel like you’re talking about), it’s not difficult. Grad schools are, I feel, open to lots of schools and just because you went to UCSC doesn’t mean you have a less likely chance of getting into a good grad school as long as you have good grades and recommendations.

I hope that helps! Feel free to shoot anymore questions.

What happens if you get written up?

If you’re written up, they’ll take your name and ID number, and make notes of the incident that occurred. If the CSOs decide to turn you in, you’ll receive a summons letter in which you must talk to an Adjudicating Officer. You’ll explain your situation, and they’ll determine whether or not you should be punished. The punishment varies from each college and also on the severity of the crime committed-- it might be an essay, or a redo of AlcoholEdu, etc.

If you don’t get a summons letter, then that means your run in with a CSO was just a warning.

Darn that really puts some bad points for UCSC for me since i’m, what some would call, a partier. At least you have some out-of-campus parties which is good and hopefully your not as boring as ucsd

Hmmm, i Just don’t know. I’ve heard some people say SC is not a very sociable college, and i love people so that could not work out for me. Anywho, ill prob end up going up there to check it out and hopefully hit up a party and see how it is.

I’m a first year currently living in the dorms at Porter…drinking/partying is NOT hard to get away with here as long as you’re not stupid about it.

^I agree. On top of that, Porter is really social. It’s not hard to make friends here.

It all depends on which college you are in, I guess.
