Course recommendations for Exeter?

Hi!

I’m an incoming lower to Phillips Exeter Academy, and I’m having a bit of a struggle trying to choose courses! Any recommended ones? I love filmmaking, history, and writing!

I was a new lower, and I took Modern India (a history course) and it was really great. The Early Modern Europe class was really good too. There is a filmmaking class-- I never took it, but it exists and people from all grade levels take it. For writing, you won’t get to take any special English electives until senior year, but you will do a lot of writing in the 200 level English classes you are required to take.

You might be interested in Poetry Stage, which is different every year but always involves the integration of poetry (reading or writing or both) and performance. It is a spring term class, and I think how it is heavily depends on who is teaching it-- but since it is in spring you have time to scope that out. The only classes you really need to be sure about now are fall term classes-- you will register for the whole year in advance, but you can change your winter and spring term classes later with no problem.

Hope that helps!

If you have not taken bio and physics, they are required and may be best to start to get out of the way lower year.

Math will be placement.

Language will be placement.

English 200

“Elective”, A history class of your choice, or a term of art.

Lower health (1/3 credit each term)

Consider west african drumming (1/3 credit each term), or another performance music ensemble.

Next year will be much harder with history 333, so choose a mix of harder and easier classes lower year. Especially take it easy first term.

I chose Religion and Popular Culture, Speechwriting, and Early Modern Europe. Are those good choices?
