course registration

During my first semester of my freshman year, i was in enrolled in a calculus 1 class (1341). I found myself not doing so well so i withdrew from that class. I talked to my advisor about and she said I could take it the next semester. As i began signing up for my spring classes, I found that there was no calculus 1 (1341) classes available; only calculus 1 (1241) classes. I am not sure what the actual difference is, but will it make a difference if i sign up for the 1241 class instead? I am currently under a time constraint so a quick answer would be much appreciated!!

What college and major? Course numbers are specific to each university, so no one here can tell you anything without more information.

Ask the professor what the difference is.

Are you at Northeastern?

My guess would be that Math 1341 is required for scientists, engineers, mathematicians, etc. while Math 1241 is required for some other majors (probably not business and economics, because that’s what Math 1231 is for.

First I would do some basic research on your own. Look at the course catalogue for your college – most college have them online if you don’t have a hard copy. Check: 1) the course description of the two classes to get an idea of the difference; 2) look at requirements for your major and for any general education distribution requirements (should also be online or in the course catalog) and see if the 124 class fulfills it 3) and check to see if there are courses you need to take later on that the calc 134 may be a prerequisite for. On another post you say you are an engineering student so there is a reasonable chance that you need the higher level course.

Once you gather this information I would email your academic advisor for further guidance.

Also consider – what makes you think the same course will be easier to manage second semester? Do you have any kind of a a plan in place (ex. tutor, appointments at math center, going over some material over break?) to help you to have a better outcome this coming semester?
