Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice in regards to course scheduling. I am applying to transfer to universities with urban studies programs, but I’m also interested in minoring in statistics (I love math, but I REALLY love it when I see it applied.) I really think a statistics background would be useful in business, government, etc., wherever I end up working, and it would be helpful if I do research, too. Basically, it’'s an avenue for me to continue studying something quantitative that also relates to professional/research interests.
My school doesn’t have very many statistics courses, so I’m explaining how that’s a factor in my desire to transfer (though the main reason is definitely urban studies). Now here’s my dilemma: I’m currently enrolled in my first statistics course, and the teacher is horrible. I’m worried about pulling off a good enough grade on the mid-term report.
Would it sound completely baseless if I mentioned my interest in minoring in statistics and taking applied, specialized courses in the discipline, if I haven’t taken an actual course devoted completely to statistics? I’m considering switching into a history class, which has a much better professor, but if I do that, I won’t have any courses with the word “Statistics” in it.
I took Calc II and Microeconomics last semester and got As, and I’m in Macroeconomics and Multivariable Calc right now. Some of my extracurricular activities have involved stats in some capacity as well. Would this be enough to explain statistics as a secondary reason for transferring, or do you think I need to have a course in it? My exposure to stats in economics, activities, and even independent reading has been enough to solidify my interest (I wrote my transfer essay before I got off the waitlist for the stats course anyway), but I’m worried about how my application will look without a stats course. If I switch out of the class.
Thank you all!
