Hi everyone, I am thinking about attending UCD for Animal Science, which I am super stoked about, but have a few questions about course selection.
Is it easy to get the classes you want (if you choose a course, will you most likely get it)?
Are there any required courses you must take in you first year, or can you take whatever courses you want?
Thanks!
@xoxoangel: there are some courses where it’s difficult to get the classes you want. The Design classes are notorious for this, so Design majors often have a hard time getting into the classes they need.
For the animal science major, you would definitely need to take ANS 1 and ANS 2 your first year. Completing the BIS 2 series or CHE 2 series your freshman year is also ideal, because those are the prerequisites for nearly all your upper div classes for the ANS major. Unlike other majors at UCD, the animal science advising center has put up sample schedules on their website: http://asac.ucdavis.edu/Handouts%204%20ANS%20Sample%20Schedules.htm
During Freshman orientation you will placed in small groups with a peer advisor whom will go over the courses you need to take your first year. Most will be pre-req and GE’s. You are free to choose any of these classes but you need to have several choices in case a section is full. Class Registration is based upon the number of units you have so if you have AP/IB or CC credits coming in as a Freshman , you will have an earlier registration time during orientation. You can check the required classes on the UCD website to give you an idea of your possible choices. Also since UCD is on quarter system, taking no more than 15 units is recommended for first quarter just to get use to the fast pace.
Everything will be explained during orientation so definitely attend.
Thank you!! I’m So excited to attend Davis!
Hey! If you have taken a lot of APs, you will always be first to choose classes among your peers. If not, then you will have to compete for spots in more popular classes, like lower division chemistry classes. They always fill up. I suggest taking 4 classes your first quarter, because the more units you accumulate, the earlier you will pick up classes.
