As an incoming student, who helps you pick your classes? We got a letter confirming our contract and saying that we'd be getting bunches of stuff over the next few months including course selection. Now I know that language and math are determined by placement test and recommendation, but how do you determine the rest?

One thing you'll be receiving is the course catalog for next year. It will outline all the courses that are available and if there are pre-requisites (like you need Alg. 2 to take a Physics class, or a certain English class is only open to upperclassmen, etc.). In addition, you'll get a letter or some guidelines from the Academic Dean (or whoever your son's school has in the equivalent capacity) regarding the standard course sequence, graduation requirements, and so on. Then you and your son pour over all that and figure out what he wants to take! And I'm sure that the good folks in the academic office will be available over the summer to answer any questions you have. It's all very exciting!!

What courses would you highly recommend to a new student (9th grade)?

for exeter, you have to already select your courses next week.

For new students?

for incoming 9th graders. I don't know about the other grades.

Really? When did they send the information? I never got a packet, was it in the acceptance letter packet?

I think you have to get an email on the account and they sent me a course selections book online.they sent me my exeter email address and I had to sign on and there was an email full of instructions.

I'm not sure hides under bed but, that is what I did.

Quick question about choosing classes for Exeter...They say a five course maximum, so does phys ed. count as a course or not.

For example, will my course load be
English, Math, French, US History, Biology (...and Gym? or yes to gym and drop a class...?)

CanadianKid, we are trying to figure out the best course of action too. My daughter will be placed in math and foreign language after the test. Then she will choose between bio and physics, and pick an elective. She just isn't sure whether she should pick history, or something like art, which she really wants to take (and of course is a graduation requirement).

Didn't I read somewhere that after you pick your classes, your parents get to speak with a counselor and then get a chance to sign off on your choices?

At Exeter you take your 5 core classes - for example history, english, math, spanish and chemistry. PE is an additional class. For new preps and lowers you also have to take Health. So, really you are taking 7 classes but PE and Health are just pass/fail classes.
When my S went through the course selection process last year we called the dean of student's office and they were very helpful.

I was wondering, could i take geometry over the summer and tell the school, so in the fall, I could take algebra II?

For a prep at exeter (freshman), the courses book says they normally take math, science, english, a foreign language, junior studies and health. So, with PE, would that be 6 credits or only five? so would I be able to add like history or theater to it?

i have the same question. I took geometry last summer.

So just to clarify with my question, a future courseload could be:

English 310
Math (any #)
French 349
Biology 210
US History
Varsity Football

Right?

CanadianKid, varsity football is not a class. Everybody is required to play three seasons sports (with certain exceptions) and this is after school, not a course.

Ya but its' filed under Physical Education PEM130: Varsity Football, next to a bunch of other classes that are not interscholastic sports...

yes, canadiankid, the way exeter explains it, you are choosing three terms of phys ed/sports when you register.

We haven't recieved anything from Exeter regarding course selection. We did get a course book in the acceptance packet, but no mention of when we were to select the classes. Are we missing something? Are the choices really due by next week?

Thanks for the help

Bokebaba: You should have recieved an email and a letter in the mail telling you about your own Exeter email account. I think in that letter it talks about the Exeter Blackboard where you choose your courses.

For exeter, could I do like two terms of acting and then one term of history as my fifth course?
