I’m currently a sophomore taking the following courses:
(H) Geometry, (H) Eng 10, (H) Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Psychology, Spanish 3, Econ/Civics.
I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA.
Over this summer I’ve decided to take (H) PreCalc so I can take AP Calc next year (and yes, I’ve been told by teachers and counselors countless times that this isn’t recommended, but I’m currently self-studying Pre-Calc right now… so hopefully I won’t feel too overwhelmed when I take the summer class). I took (H) Alg 2 my freshman year.
What I Want to Take Next Year:
(H) Physics, AP Chem, AP Calc, AP Lang, IB Spanish HL Y1, World History… and now I have space for one year-long elective course.
I’ve decided against taking AP World, because history is my weakest subject and I’m just not interested in the course overall; I’m looking for more of a STEM-related pathway. I’ve also heard that one of the AP World teachers at our school is terrible.
I originally wanted to take AP Comp Sci as an elective, but looking back at my schedule I’m wondering if I can handle the workload. Along with prepping for SAT/ACT, junior year is probably going to give me a lot of stress, and I’d rather not take another AP course that would likely negatively impact my GPA.
But then again I feel like I’m underestimating my abilities, which has happened a couple of times after counselors/teachers warned me not to take a specific class and I didn’t - to my regret.
Is it worth taking AP Comp Sci next year? Or should I fill in the space with a blow-off class?
