Courses starting with 1s vs. those with 2s

I realize that courses starting with 1s are desgined for first years, but many first years choose those with 2s. Are courses starting with 2s necessarily harder and have more papers/midterms/quizzes/work in general?

A rising second year suggested not to take introductory history classes because they are too broad and are less interesting, is this true?

I want to take ARTH 2251 (Italian Renaissance Art), but I have absolutely no knowledge in art history, do you think I will be able to cope with it?

Don’t look at the numbers as measure of difficulty. A 1000 would be a general seminar on the topic. Whereas, at least in the history department, a 2000 would be a survey lecture course, a 3000 a topic focused course and so it goes.

You can take any course as long as you meet the prerequisites. I do agree 200 level courses are more defined and interesting than 100 level courses.
