courses that req department approval (specifically cogs)

I was interested in taking one of those seminars on special topics, specifically one that is under the cogs department. It requires department approval to enroll, and no classroom or time has been added yet only time and instructor. Who would I contact for the approval, the instructor or someone else? Also could I go about doing this now, or would I wait until Fall classes start. I know for certain classes you simply contact the instructor to waive it. Any advice would be helpful, hopefully from someone that has specifically undergone this process.

I had to get dept approval for one of my computer science courses Winter quarter. I just went to the CS dept, signed some form, and they approved me no questions asked. Not sure if it would be the same for you though. It might depend on the class too.

I’ve done the 160s in the COGS department. Contact the professor as soon as possible (dont wait till the fall), they will contact the undergrad advisor (Thanh) and she will clear you for enrollment. I dont think you need to sign forms for 160s, only for 199s

Which professor is it with?

Thanks for the replies, and it is 160 Brain + Behavior with Deak, Gedeon. Do I e-mail him? And also if you know him or have taken a class with him, how is he? Also could you tell me about your 160 experience, what professor, what you did, difficulty etc? I was also wondering if it was a problem that I am still sophomore standing, with about 10 units to go until 90 units since it is an upper division level class.

Deak is pretty cool I’ve heard but I have never taken a class with him. Just send him an email and tell him you are interested / what exp you have if any.

I did mine with Bergen for Language and Behavior research, he was pretty awesome. Show up, participate, do the work / research = get an A.

It’s usually not a problem if you have under 90 units, just ask the undergrad adviser to clear you.
