Covid 19 Vaccines for 5-11 year olds

One of the pediatrician offices here has scheduled a vaccine clinic on Saturday for 5-11 year olds who are there patients.

Anyone else hear any news?

I also have spoken to more than a handful of parents who are reluctant to have their very young kids get this shot.

Our office already started! The benefits outweigh the risks, based on the data

Folks in my area are scampering to get appointments for their kids. Local pharmacies are starting to administer them next week.

Here in NYC there are school based clinics, city sponsored clinics (including the one under the whale in the natural history museum) and tons of pediatricians opening their doors to everyone, even those not their patients. Seems appointments are filling up fast! I am an allergist and I am telling my patients to get it done!

Hartford Health administered vaccinations last night. Yale New Haven Health opened appointments this morning and I believe will start administering tomorrow. Another facility in New Haven offered walk-up appointments today.

Access seems decent in CT, with some towns ready to administer once their ordered supply of vaccines arrives next week.

I’m in Southern California and can’t find a local appt for my 2nd grader because there are no slots available. I’m either going to have to wake up at midnight or 5 am to book her appointment. Been patiently not patiently waiting for the day to come!

My niece’s 5 year old has cerebral palsy & almost died from a coronavirus in February 2020. She was told it wasn’t Covid 19, but it was a coronavirus, just the same. She has had to be incredibly careful with him ever since. She will get her son vaccinated as soon as it’s available here.

I’m in Northern California and found appointments for Friday morning in SF and Daly City at Walgreens. Otherwise, nothing. I’m not going to pull her from school because she had Covid in August, so I’ll wait until Thanksgiving week (off of school) and should be able to find something that week.

It’s not Covid vaccine vs nothing. It’s Covid vaccine vs inevitable infection with Covid-19. The risks associated with infection with Covid-19 for children, especially with the more virulent delta variant, are far, far higher than the extraordinarily miniscule risk of any side effect from the vaccine. Hopefully, parents will go ahead and immunize their children with this lower-dose children’s vaccine, for the child’s own benefit, not to mention the benefit to the vulnerable adults who come into contact with the child.

A two year old’s immune system is largely equivalent to a 5 year old’s, in terms of vaccine response. Most of the vaccines that we give to children use the same dose for a 2 year old as for older children. Honestly, if I had a preschooler who could pass for 5 years old, I’d be taking them to an anonymous site, like a pharmacy, and lying to get them vaccinated with the pediatric 5-11 year old dose.

I believe there is availability in our state but haven’t researched since my kids are in 30s and fully vaxed in their respective states.

My friends with younger kids are all getting appointments for their kids. No reluctance here. I try to stay away from the type of people who would second guess science.

I work in pediatrics. Our clinics are starting 5-11 clinics next week. Some in the state started giving vaccines yesterday. There is basically tears of relief from the many pediatricians I follow that finally, this option is available for 5-11.

I should add…my son works in a K-8 school. The district normally has classes Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week and is off Wednesday and the rest of the week. They have decided to close all that week in hopes that parents will use the extra time to get kids vaccinated - or better yet, the whole family (high risk population, many of the adults are not yet vaccinated so it’s questionable how open they will be to vaccinating their children).

I’m hoping that the health department can work with schools to do some on-site vaccinations (with parents permission of course).

Getting up at dawn worked! Got the first shot scheduled for my 7 year old on Sunday. Huge sigh of relief. Feels like a turning point. :crossed_fingers:t3:

Interestingly, page 7 of https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/acip/meetings/downloads/slides-2021-11-2-3/03-COVID-Jefferson-508.pdf says “Seroprevalence in children aged 5–11 years: 38% (95% CI: 36–40%)” and “Similar to estimates in children aged 12–17 years”.

Can you back up this statement. The flu is very prevalent in young children and can be just as severe if not more severe in children.

Most people I know have been waiting for this! I haven’t checked on availability yet. We are just waiting til we can get my 20 month old grandson vaccinated! It will be a huge relief to my daughter who works in a day care and takes him with her. She is scheduling a booster for herself over Thanksgiving. His pediatrician highly recommends it and so does the immunologist we know that has been doing research for years on these type vaccines!

Here is some information from the CDC:

There are many corona viruses… most of us have had a corona virus infection in our lifetimes.

Thank you for the clarification. Yes I am aware there are many Coronaviruses and that we have all had a coronavirus. I guess I just misread the statement as she was told it wasn’t Covid 19 but it was Covid 19 just the same., as many people are insisting they had Covid 19 with no actual proof. I apologize for misunderstanding the statement.

yes, when covid first hit, our office had an old container of Lysol wipes that said it killed up to 99% of coronaviruses. There are plenty of them out there. Covid19 is just “special.”
