Hey so I'm taking the December SAT, but the sentence completions are tripping me up half the time. Sometimes I'm able to ace the sentence completions, but other times I completely fail. I'm wondering if anybody could hook me up with some tips on how to stay consistent with this section. I have very little trouble with Reading Comprehension but these Sentence Completions can really kill me.

Is your problem with vocabulary or with comprehending what the question is asking for?

If you have little trouble with reading comprehension and can sometimes ace sentence completions then you probably need to build your vocabulary.

Study Latin/Greek roots and look at direct hits/essential 500 vocab books.

roots o.o that sounds awfully complicated to me. But yes, vocabulary is essential. 900 words took my score from 620 to 800.

I don’t have trouble with understanding the question, but the vocab throws me off sometimes.

AltoLime, how did you learn those words? Any books?

Instead of memorizing words, pay more attention to the structure of the particular section and how the questions work. For example, don’t “preform” the answer as you work through sentence completions, i.e. don’t predict what the answer is before reading the answer choices because that could often confuse you. Consider every answer choice, and go from there. Good luck.

@rish

I disagree. predicting what the word will be, looking for a similar word (crossing off wrong answers as you go, literally or not), and then plugging the word back into the sentence to make sure the word works is VERY quick. this leaves time for revisions or extra time to work on pbr.

the sat WILL give you <appealing> words to trick the faint of mind. predicting what the word will be (in simple terms) can help with these obstacles.</appealing>

if you have no trouble quickly understanding what should be the answer (in simple terms), then you just need to work on vocab. there are vocab lists online, direct hit’s volume 1/2, essential 500 book, roots lists online, quizzes online, ect. for those of you saying lists are bad: no. they can be time consuming, so don’t allot all of your study time to them. focus on other aspects of the sat too.

however the op clearly says that he understands the questions fine, is doing reading comprehension fine, and just needs help on the meaning of vocab words.

If vocabulary is your issue then do Word Smart I. It is not built for the SAT but then again, the SAT does not have an established word list and all these lists that we find are just some common words. I did several words from the dictionary too which I felt that I had regularly seen in my diagnostics. I used to read the sentence first, got a general idea of what the words should be but did not pre-decide them. Looked at the answers but always remained open to the fact that I may be wrong in my interpretation of the question. Deduced through the answer choices whether my interpretation was right or wrong and then eliminated the wrong answers. By doing the 900ish words, I could eliminate up to four choices and this would be enough for me to choose the right answer.

Given how little time you have left. I recommend you do The essentials CR book or use sparknotes.

Facing the same dilemma as you and am slogging my guts out on revising vocab…

Could anybody grade my essay if I posted it here?
Also, I’m almost done with Princeton Review SAT vocab flashcards, but I don’t really see those words on practice tests
