do you read the whole passage (s) before starting on questions or read while doing questions?
The grammatix strategy says to read only first & last sentences of the passages, but everytime I do that, I do very bad. Whenever I read the passages before starting, I do okay but it takes up alot of time.

I usually read like 1/2 of it so that i can finish the first 1/2 to 2/3 questions. Then I read the questions w/o the passage because I basically understand the passage then.

i heard first read the ? then come back to know what ur lookin for

i would suggest use the way in which you do better.

The method I'm currently using works very well.

Skim the questions and find the ones that refer to specific words or lines. Go to the passage and circle words (for the questions that ask what the word most nearly means) or bracket the lines they ask about (for the questions regarding lines). Then when you read the complete passage and immediately read the circled word or bracketed line, go to the question and answer it immediately.

I'm a very fast reader, so I quickly skim the whole passage to get a gist for what its talking about. Then I work my way through all the questions, skipping the ones that I'm not sure about. I then go back to the ones I skipped and read that paragraph/section again.

If the grammatix method doesn't work for you, don't use it. Experiment until you find something you feel comfortable with.

bump (10 char)
has anyone here done well on CR using gramattix?

My method was to read the questions, then skim the reading, fill in all possible questions, then go back and read as necessary to get the rest. It won't necessarily work for everyone, but it got me an 800...but try it on a PRACTICE test before counting on it on the real deal--I've none of my friends can use that method, but who knows--it could work for you. It does require very fast reading. Sounds a lot like ever_after's method.

how much time do you guys give yourselves when practicing the passage reading questions? (im splitting the CR section into 2 pieces when studying - i'm studying passage reading independently from complete the sentence)

For the sections with 1 huge passages:
give the passage 15 minutes and ten for the sentences (although 10 mins for sentences is more than enough)

For the paired passages:
give the passages 20 minutes and 5 for the sentences.

thank you stuck-on-1700 :)

Would it be okay if I studied off of the red 10RS before studying on the blue? Are there any major differences between the old passage-based sections & the new ones?

i just read the passages then do the questions, referring back as needed....

my tutor has told me for the CR questions that refer to a specific line or opinion etc, that you don't read the entire passage but go to that specific part read it but also read about 2 sentences before and 2 sentences after because they mention the answer a little afterwards.

ftc123,
I think that you should start with the bluebook to become familiar with the test first, then move on to the 10 Real SATs.

They don't differ that much; you might notice some things in math that have been removed from the bluebook but other than that, it's okay to use.

I just read the passages. they're not that long and you can get through it quickly if you are a fast reader.
