Crabrook or Northfield Mount Hermon?

got admitted into these schools, which one is better?
also WL on The Hill, Blaire Academy, St George....
What about the change of WL @ Blair?
PLs help

We’re all going to say the same thing: it depends on fit. If you can, revisit as many schools as possible and ask if you need help deciding after that.

Congratulations!

what about if both schools do fit him? which one is better?

If you go to revisits thinking one school is “better,” you’ll end up finding little things that make it that way. Go to revisits. Look around.

what is your general comments on both schools ?

I can only speak for NMH, and I love it. Everyone is so nice, and while classes are challenging it seems pretty laid-back. I love the workjob program–I think it keeps kids grounded.

what do you mean by laid back? I heard the school is quite free? any idea?

Since one school is in MICHIGAN and the other is in MASSACHUSETTS, I’m very surprised you don’t have a strong geographic preference-- are you international?

Yes I am … as both seem good school. But NMH seems more reputable than Cranbrook and i like it with its small class size but it’s in a middle of no where.

I don’t know about “reputable”. NMH is more widely known because it’s on the East Coast, and that is the main geographical market for boarding school customers in the U.S.

My sense is that Cranbrook has a higher academic standard. Cranbrook’s avg SSAT is similar to NMH’s, but I doubt that the kids who apply to Cranbrook obsess about their SSAT score the way the East Coast boarding school applicants do, and are less likely to have taken the test multiple times to try to increase their score. Also, cranbrook reports its avg SAT score of 1939, which is quite strong. NMH doesn’t report its.

In terms of endowment, cranbrook is quite bit richer w a $270k endowment per student, vs MNH’s $190k/student.

In terms of travel logistics, Cranbrook is less than an hour to DTW. Delta has non-stop flights to asia & europe from DTW. NMH is over an hr to BDL (mostly domestic flights) and 2 hrs to BOS. Schools do provide transport to airports during breaks.

In terms of the boarding experience, NMH will offer a classic East Coast boarding culture, w a lot of fun rivalry w other East Coast boarding schools. It is 83% boarding.

Cranbrook is only 1/3 boarding. The school’s culture will be dominated by the commuting schedule of the day students who are the vast majority.

NMH is 1/4 int’l students. Cranbrook is 1/8 int’l.

If cost is a factor, Cranbrook’s tuition is a lot lower.

Have u visited the schools? Where would your son be HAPPIER? The school is going to be his HOME for 3/4 of the year.

I’m a NMH parent. Although the atmosphere at NMH is “laid-back” (a little more relaxed) the classes are rigorous. When we registered my daughter, there was a math student from Singapore signing up for both “Number Theory” and “Linear Algebra” as a junior, courses usually taught in the US to college juniors - not high school juniors. Homework averages about 4 hours a night and although NMH is “homey” the academics are excellent and the pace is brisk ( a downside for some to the block schedule - kids are often learning the equivalent of a full year of high school material in just half a year which is also why the school does not focus much on APs).

I am not sure that the Cranbrook kids will have retaken the SSATs fewer times either - where we live the competition for day student/day school spots is equal to if not greater than the competition at many East Coast boarding schools. Bloomfield Hills is a very upscale suburb where parents are likely to put a high value on education, and be able to pay for it - and pay for test prep.

Having a large international community at NMH is also a comfort to many international students. The school runs shuttle buses to JFK for international flights which is the airport you will need to get to Asia - and the bus leaves in the morning so it is possible to catch an evening flight to Asia. There will be many Asian NMH students headed that direction so the buses are timed to make travel to Asia possible. They run a bus to Boston’s airport too but there are not as many international flights out of Boston.

what kind of Shuttle buses? how can i find out more info? thanks

Boarding schools usually have a travel coordinator and/or an international student director who takes care of booking shuttle buses at break times to drop off and pick up kids at the airports.

Often times, the shuttle bus info is on the school’s website. If u can’t find it there, then go ahead and call the school and ask them. They will be especially glad to help u now, as they are keen to have their admitted students to choose them over another school.

FYI, NMH bus webpage:
http://www.nmhschool.org/faq/charter-bus

Its a commercial sized bus used exclusively for NMH students who can sign up on-line. It picks up right on campus and goes straight to the airport

Thanks for the info. How do NMH compares to Blaire Adaemy? thanks

They are comparable academically. A big plus Blair has over NMH for int’l families is it is only 1.5 hour to JFK.
