I didn't even know about until I read about it in a Chances thread. I didn't talk about why I wanted to major in Engineering in either essay.

What do I do now? I already turned in my app.

bump! will this decrease my chances of admission?

According to the counselor I had in high school, writing about engineering is crucial. Basically, she told me a story of a guy who had amazing stats and extracurricular activities but was rejected because he did not mention his interest in engineering whatsoever. He later got in after he appealed. I don't know whether she just made it up or not, but when I was applying, I remember the application had a warning near the engineering majors saying that applicants should demonstrate an interest in engineering. I'm not sure if it will decrease your chances but it's probably not going to help. That's my two cents.

EDIT: I think it's okay if you don't write about engineering specifically IF you wrote about a demonstrated interest in science/math. I just remembered for my essays I never wrote specifically about liking EECS; I wrote about my passion for learning about science and my interest in tinkering with electronics. If you're somewhere in the ballpark, it's fine.

Thanks Chairman Meow

I can't say that I talked about science/math but I wrote about my desire to learn new things/gain new knowledge. Is there anything I can do? I'm very very concerned...

You already submitted, so just wait and see if you got accepted or not.

The suspense is already killing me.

@Jteh: im in the exact same position as you. I applied as engineering undeclared and both my essays were about....philosophy.

BUT!!! There IS hope. I talked to one of my friends who applied last year to Cal as a Civil Engineering Major. He also DID NOT mention engineering/interest in it whatsoever but he got in.

So that's good. (im assuming the policy was the same last year. If not, then we ARE screwed, lol).

Thank you for relieving the stress!! Good luck to you in admissions! I'm applying as a CivilE major so hopefully I can get in like your friend did.

I didn't even know about this.

I applied to CSE for all, except Cal.

Oh well, just hope for the best.

na-uh.................................................................i'm done :(
i guess i missed dat part...
i kinda wrote about how i wanna help ppl....................does dat count?
i wrote one essay mainly about art....even tho i'm majoring in engineering...
will dat hurt?
i have passion in both art/math but now dat i look back..i didn't really mention
much about math...or more like nothing about math...other than some awards i got...

^There is still hope!! I'm sure there's a lot more students like us who didn't know about the need to write about engineering in the personal statements.

If you are one of them, please post here! We can all stress out together :)

Or if you got into engineering without doing writing about it, tell us too! That would be better.

I got into engineering school without writing about engineering at all. I wrote about volunteering at the hospital and growing up in LA. Didn't mention a thing about engineering at all.
