I’ve read that the dining and dorms at Bard are pretty bad… Is that true?

food wasn’t great when we visited, i didn’t think. If you’re choosing a school on the basis of this, then this probably wouldn’t be your first choice! If you’re looking for small, stimulating discussion-based classes, and a student body that spends time outside of class discussing ideas, then Bard would be a good fit. That’s based on our visits and what I’ve heard from parents with students there. My S is a prospective student.

The food is my son’s only complaint. He does come from the Bay Area and has grown up on fantastic food. So his standards are high. His dorm is a portable - and great. Looks dreary from the outside, but is perfect inside. Roomy (he has multiple instruments including a keyboard and there is still more room), has a view, clean, working heating and air-conditioning, and wonderful dormmates.

But SDonCC is right - if you’re choosing your college based on the cafeteria - this isn’t the place.

I’ve seen worse dorms.

And the cafeteria staff really does respond to ideas in the suggestion box.

Thanks everyone.
I love Bard and if they decided to starve me for four years, I’d probably still attend.

A very close friend of mine attends Bard, and she loves the food. I will say that her tastes in food are pretty limited and bland, though. I’ve visited her there, and while the food is far from gourmet, there’s nothing inherently wrong with it.

I also have a good friend who attends Dartmouth. The food is great, and he’s put on 18 pounds since he started as a freshman last August. I’ve visited him, and I could easily see how that could happen.

This is limited anecdotal evidence, to be sure. But I agree with some of the posters that even if food is high on your list, try to look beyond it.

Good luck! :)

The food isn’t great. It’s okay. The only REAL problem is that you get sick of it day after day after day. Occasionally Kline will have a really bad day, but more often then not, it’s “okay,” sometimes even really good. It could definitely be much worse and there’s always pizza, pastas, and a salad bar available if none of the “themed” foods tickle your fancy.

The dorms… Really depends on where you live and who’s living with you. In my opinion, Tewksbury and Honey House are the 2 least aesthetically pleasing dorms on campus. My dorm, Cruger, has large rooms and is pretty nice.

Most of the dorm rooms are actually pretty nice and spacious for the most part. Bathrooms are another story all together. Some are single bathrooms, some are multiple person bathrooms. The quality of cleanliness REALLY depends on who lives in the dorm and whatnot, and weekends are especially trying as the cleaning staff doesn’t come them. Bathroom shoes/flip flops will be your best friend.
