Craziest HS in the WORLD!

*Note: This topic is for the amusement of stressed applicants ;)
This is Korean Minjok(national) Leadership Academy.
It is Korea's most prestigious university and competition to get in there is overwhelming

Look at the admissions, its simply eye popping

These guys dont even bother looking at 2nd tier colleges. Insane

wow
r u a student tere?

that is pretty crazy. You go to school in Korea?

Nop. I'm a TCK (third culture kid), but I was accepted at Daewon Foreign Language High School (Which is just second best to this INSANE school) but I was accepted because of my spanish skills :P
I've lived like all over the place, lol

wuts a third culture kid? so u live in like korea?

No. I'm living in the Dominican Republc. I've been living all over the world (11 years in Latin America, 1 year in Europe, 4.5 years in Korea)
*Look Third Culture Kid in Wikipedia

wow im too lazy to look =P tats pretty cool tho all these places u've been too

Princeton in Korea: Minjok: October 2004

lol avg SAT in that school is 1490/1600 (I guess they discount the writing section?). Higher than any other high school in the world (including US)
Crazyy....

How is the average Math SAT score 793? I thought all scores ended in 0s.. thats insane though.. the average student gets a perfect score on their Math SATs...

This can happen anywhere, if schools were only better funded. Example: The South Carolina Governor's School for Math and Science has an average SAT score of 1450. This is in South Carolina, mind you. Its possible, but the education system is very very flawed.

I heard of that school. The school's insane. The average student sleeps at about 2 or 3 AM, and they study, study, and study like little automatons. These kids are bred for a single purpose, to gain admittance to the top ranking universities in the US and Britain. Mostly they come from well established Korean families around the main Seoul metropolitan area, and have the financial backing to boot.

Well, this sickens me as I'm opposed to the brutal Korean system of cut-throat education in the first place...

To the OP: You must be pretty smart yourself to get into Daewon. I've considered applying there but migrated back to the US with my green card... No offense, but I enjoy sleeping on the same day I wake up...

Wow... 1000th post...

joe, thats the average score so I guess few people get like 790s/780s, but majority gets 800

Really? I have never seen a US high school top 1400/1600. And I don't think SC governor's school for math and science is 1450. (Avg SAt score for this school was 1959/2400 in 2007. I think its highly unlikely that CR + M = 1450 and W only = 509 in any school)

Even if it is possible, SC is located in US. Where umm most people speak English? That korean school is located in Korea where people speak korean and english = foreign language. No matter how much a foreign school is funded, if its students are not brilliant, they can't achieve avg score of near 700 in CR.

Thnx Gryffon5147, but I just got accepted and I took off right away and I'm currently attending an international school elsewhere :p. (my classmates HATED that, lol)
Anyways, this school IS NOT that well funded actually, compared to most american private/prep schools

yeah, you have to be really top of your middle school class to gain admission to this school. And it is not as well funded as many boarding schools in america.

Yes, the average placement from this school is definitely above the normal high school average--last year's placement of 2 to Harvard, 2 to Yale, 1 to MIT, 6 to Stanford, 4 to Penn, and 6 to Cornell does stand out.

Most schools in the US (except for the Phillips Academies at Exeter and Andover) would be happy to get those kind of placement numbers over a 3 to 5-year period--and even the Phillips Academy at Andover's SAT average is only 1349/1600.

My school sends about the same number of students to top schools like stanford, yale, princeton, etc.. but thats not whats amazing.
Its much harder to get into US schools if you are international.

Most kids there get into top korean unversities (some are harder to get into then the ivys)

I know several people that work in Daewon high school...

793 avg. SAT math score!?!?!?!? o_O

My Gosh!!!

and considering most koreans in korea lack ECs (some don't have any at all). They still manage to be an international and get accepted to top colleges (ex. Harvard) solely by their academics.

Being international + no ECs usually = auto reject in many US colleges, but some gain admission purely by academic potential.

Plus... private schools like Andover or Exeter send so many ppl to Yale/Harvard mostly because of the alumni and because they are RICH kids (including G. Bush)
