Creating an Onyen

Wait, how do I do it? I’m sorry, I just can’t navigate the myUNC. I found my pin though :)

go to onyen.unc.edu and the first link on the page is create onyen! then, after that, it’ll explain what to do.

Oh, thanks, I got it! And my ONYEN is pretty great too… surprisingly!

I got mine, and its a good one

…does the Onyen just look like our old portal? For some reason I expected it to be different…whatever - love my ONYEN!

For those of you attending UNC, your onyen and password become your credentials to access to most web based applications. You’ll use it to access the computers in the libraries, blackboard (web based class information), when you register for classes, pretty much anything that requires a computer and a password.

Remember that you need to change your onyen password every 90 days, but you only need to change one character from the current password and you can’t use the same one within a 12 month period. So you can use d0ntUseThis!, d0ntUseThis@, d0ntUseThis#, d0ntUseThis$ - throughout the year and then start again with the ! if you want.

Make sure it is something related to your name. To whoever said they would probably pick something random, this is a bad idea. Your onyen is your e-mail address, i.e. what will be on your resume when you’re looking for jobs in four years. Employers won’t take you seriously if your e-mail address is skater4lyfe@email.unc.edu.

I received a letter likethis
Admitted Student Access to MyUNC
Once students are admitted to UNC, they must use their ONYEN (or Only Name You’ll Ever Need), to access MyUNC. The ONYEN is not only your user name for your UNC computer account but also serves as your unique identifier for access to important UNC services such as financial aid and housing.
To create your ONYEN, please visit onyen.unc.edu, and click on “Create An Onyen.” You will then be prompted to enter your last name and your Personal Identification Number (or PID). After entering this information, you will be immediately presented with an ONYEN, and you will be given the opportunity to modify it (if you choose) and to create a confidential password.
Please note that your UNC Guest ID (the username you used when applying for admission) will expire after your ONYEN is created. Once you create your ONYEN you will only be able to access MyUNC with your ONYEN.
Using your ONYEN and password, you may log into onyen.unc.edu and manage your UNC email account (create an easy-to-remember alias or change your password, for example). You may access your email by clicking on “Webmail” at this same site or by visiting mail.unc.edu. Check your UNC email account regularly because from this point forward, the University will communicate with you through this new account.

But there’s no sign of me being accepted…what is that…??

To those concerned about your onyen being used as your email address for resume’s, etc. You can also create an email alias that will end with @unc.edu. After creating your onyen, you can go back to onyen.unc.edu and scroll down toward the middle of the page and select “set email alias”. You can create something like firstname.lastname@unc.edu or firstname_lastname@unc.edu, for FLastname@unc.edu. You can create multiple email alias’s for your onyen. Just remember that you’ll still use your onyen and password to access campus based web services, but you can use the alias for your email address.
