Any advice from current students? What is the normal thing to do? Do most students make it their name? Anything you shouldn't make it? Any regrets with the name you chose?

Don’t make it something like “xXxPiMp4LyFexXx” or something. That’s just embarrassing.

Make it something simple, like first letter of your first name+last name, or some variation. You will be typing it A LOT, so don’t make it hard on yourself.

if you’re John Doe, jdoe, johnd, john, doe, johndoe are all acceptable. Throw in your middle initial if you have to.

(out of curiosity, are you being asked to make a calnet ID just as an admit or have you already submitted your SIR?)

Mine is the first letter of my first name, my last name, and the year I was born. e.g. jdoe90.

Yeah, keep it simple and professional.

It might make things simpler if it’s the same as the first part of your @berkeley.edu email, even though it doesn’t have to be.

It’s going to be your login for everything Berkeley-related.

I did first letter of first name + last name and ended up with a really simple one. You might end up having to do your full name.

Just don’t do anything stupid, such as: excelblue, mike-da-brown, etc.

Would you advise against including my birth year?

I personally don’t like the extra stretch needed to type in the numbers. It’s personal preference.

I just use the same ID as my email. Simple.

I don’t see why it matters. Nobody will see it but you

I’m not sure if I should put my birth year into my Berkeley email. What if I get older and become self-conscious of my age? LOL. Sorry about my twisted reasoning.

how about add a dash between first name and surname?
such as john.doe
