Creative Writing: Oberlin vs. Kenyon?

Friend asked me questions on Oberlin's creative writing program vs. Kenyon's...couldn't answer her since my kid is in the sciences. Anyone know?

My D was accepted to both schools and loved both Kenyon and Oberlin. She decided on Oberlin for a whole host of reasons. However, she is very into creative writing and was extremely curious about the possiblilties at all the schools she looked at. At Kenyon, the director of the Kenyon Review spoke to the accepted students and was asked about the possiblilty of majoring in creative writing. the answer was “no”; that as long as he is there, he will not allow there to be a creative writing major. At Oberlin, there is a creative writing major, and an English major.

that is what I know.

Hurray! I wrote a really long answer to this question here:

Might be worth checking out!

Thank you ahuvah47 and iAries. I’ll pass the info on to my friend.

Oberlin CW department is among the strongest out there for undergrads. It is, however, one of the more competitive majors on campus (I say that in a relative sense, as the campus culture is, in general, not very competitive at all) since all workshops require a portfolio and application before acceptance. Some aspiring majors are locked out in their sophomore year, effectively preventing them from majoring. Acting is the only other major in the college that works this way, to my knowledge.

If you’re confident in your skills, Oberlin has a stellar CW faculty backed up by a superb English department and really wonderful speakers/writers in residence (see, for example, the Max Kade Writer-in-Residence program that brings prominent German authors and peots to the Oberlin campus).
