Creative Writing Summer Programs

Thanks raschu - DD applied to Iowa as well.

My daughter also received an acceptance to Kenyon last week, by mail. She also applied to Iowa, Juniper, and Interlochen. I have never been able to really figure out how selective any of these are, but the quality seems to be pretty good. I suspect that the “name” of the program may not matter quite as much in this area as what you produce and what you do with it afterwards.
Also, there may be enough cross-admits that being on the waiting list might work out OK.

Kenyon acceptance today, on the east coast.

My friend had a Kenyon acceptance yesterday.

This is absolutely true. I went to Interlochen for creative writing the last two summers, and though it may be one of the less competitive programs on your D’s list, my friends have been Scholastic gold award winners and finalists for Presidential Scholar in the Arts. I’ll put in a good word for that particular program despite it not being selective, so I imagine that across the board, it isn’t the competitiveness of admissions that matters but the quality of the program and what kids do with their education.

My son received his Kenyon acceptance today. He also applied to UVA, which is supposed to let applicants know by 3/29.

Congratulations mny on your Kenyon acceptance and good luck to all who are awaiting word from any of the programs.

Kenyon acceptance today.

Woot. Session 2.

Congratulations to those who have gotten positive responses to date. Anyone apply to UVA or better yet, anyone attend UVA’s writing program?

I’m second session Kenyon as well! Still waiting on Iowa though…

Did anyone else apply to Sewanee? I’m waiting to hear back from them, but wondering which has a better reputation…

^I applied (and was accepted to) Sewanee. It’s my second choice after Iowa, because Iowa would fit much better into my summer schedule (at least Session II would…). I’m not sure about Kenyon vs. Sewanee, though. They both seem like fun programs with good reputations. I do know that Sewanee is about $500 cheaper. ;P

I’m still waiting on Iowa too- when are we supposed to hear back from them? First week of April?

I also sent out application to Fir Acres at Lewis and Clark, Lake Forest, and Bard College at Simon’s Rock…does anyone know if these programs are good?

April 1st is when they send out the mail. I actually contacted the guy who runs it (Stephen Lovely) and he said he’d email it to me if I reminded him the day before. Fortunately, the woman who runs Sewanee said I could wait until April 1st to decide, or else I’d have to make a decision without knowing about Iowa.

Hi,
My daughter has been accepted to Sewanee and Juniper (waitlisted at Kenyon, and waiting to hear from Iowa and UVa). We’d like to hear about the pros and cons of those programs, especially if you’ve been there. I think she will have to decide quickly, and she’s new to this.
Thanks!

Writingmom;

Did you hear anything from UVA yet? Their website indicates notifications will be made by email by 3/29. My son has not hear from them to date. Thanks and good luck to your daughter.

Hi,
I called UVa today because we hadn’t heard either. They said that they had sent out an email to everyone noting that they were still reviewing applications and would let everyone know on April 1st.
Best of luck to all those waiting!

writingmom - thank you for the update. I had emailed UVA to ask about notification and got this in response:

"We sent an email yesterday afternoon (around 4 p.m). I am posting the email below, but wanted to apologize that the email did not get to you yesterday. We have found that a number of email providers filtered our message before it got to you thinking it was spam generated. We are confident that the email we send on April 1st will not have the same problems. If, however, you do not receive an email by the end of the business day on April 1st, please call or email us!

Here is the email we sent yesterday:

Dear Young Writers Workshop Applicant,

Thank you very much for your application to the 2010 University of Virginia Young Writers Workshop. This email is to notify you that we will post our admissions decisions to this summer’s program by April 1st. Applicants will be notified of these decisions via email. Thank you very much for your patience."

Good luck to everyone awaiting a response.

UVA waitlist

Not accepted to Iowa. Bummer. Sewanee screws up my summer plans, big time. :(

Oh well. I knew I didn’t have a very good chance since I’m a freshman, but I was hoping to be accepted. Congratulations to everyone who is going. =) My friend attended a few years ago and said it was awesome.

Any letters come in for anyone yet? (Silverwing, you were notified by email, correct?)

Yep, I was notified through email and I don’t think my letter has arrived.

hey everyone, which do you think would be a better program (please let me know about your experience if you’ve attended one of them!): UVA or Sewanee?

thanks :)
