I’m still waiting to hear from Iowa…keeping my fingers crossed!

bookends: Both are really great programs, I’ve heard more about UVA but I think either one would be a good choice.

D was not accepted to Iowa - she’s ok with it though as she will be going to Kenyon. Good luck to everyone else. I’m sure you will all end up doing something fun this summer. (we were notified by email - letters were mailed yesterday)

Accepted to Iowa :D

I am beyond thrilled.

Good luck to those anxiously awaiting news!

Still haven’t heard anything. Curse west coast livin’.

Same here, musicallylatin.

I applied last year and got flat out rejected, so although I’m hoping for better this year, I’m doubting it. I’m still hoping, though.

Oh, I haven’t received my acceptance packet yet; I just emailed Stephen Lovely because I needed to let another program know of my acceptance/rejection of their offer by Monday.

I’d rather just wait for a packet/letter instead of getting told by him, specifically whether of not I’m in. :D

When I got home today, I saw two big envelopes in the mail, but they were both for my dad. Once there were only regular-sized envelopes left, I stared at them and thought, “There better not be anything in here from Iowa.”

And there wasn’t. Thank goodness. xD I guess we’ll all find out early next week. :)

D got the letter in the mail today (in Oregon). Iowa does not do waitlists - it is either “accept” or “reject”. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear.

I got my rejection letter yesterday, but I’m now more positive about attending Sewanee than I was before. Sam Pickering is one of their guests (the guy who inspired Robin William’s character in “Dead Poet Society”). How cool is that? :D

Even though I would have loved to attend the Iowa Young Writer’s Studio, I’m sure that Sewanee will be a great learning experience for me to develop my writing.

MissxSilverwing,

I too applied to Sewanee (and was admitted). While I won’t be attending, I can tell you it’s an incredible school—and stunningly beautiful. Sewanee, you might not know, is quite well regarded- and fairly well ranked, if you are interested in that sort of thing. PM me if you have any questions.

@Dandemom – where did you hear that? A few of the people I went to Iowa with last year were “alternates”, aka basically waitlistees

West coaster and got my acceptance to Iowa today. So excited :D.

Congratulations to those who have heard good news, and good luck to those who are waiting. I am wondering about whether anyone on this post has had experience with waitlists. My daughter is apparently high on the waitlists for both Kenyon and UVa, and we are not sure how to manage this, given that she’s gotten into a couple of other programs (Sewanee and Juniper). Is it likely that with Iowa acceptances, there will be space on the Kenyon list? And is anyone able to tell us how Kenyon and Sewanee might differ in the experience offered?
Thanks for any information you can give us- we are pretty new to this. We’d like to find the best match, though all of these programs seem phenomenal.

crap. no iowa letter yet and the sewanee people said i need to let them know by tomorrow morning…arg. writingmom, I’m in the same boat as you. Trying to decide between Kenyon and Sewanee, if Iowa doesn’t work out.

Hi aarush,
If I were you I’d email Stephen Lovely right away. I’m pretty sure under these circumstances that he would let you know where you stand with Iowa.
Good luck!

@FC: Re: No waitlists at Iowa - It was in the e-mail that my D received from Stephen Lovely. He mentioned waitlists specifically so maybe alternates are not considered the same as waitlists??

writingmom - Re “Is it likely that with Iowa acceptances, there will be space on the Kenyon list?”

It is certainly my impression that there is a lot of overlap of applicants to Iowa, Kenyon, UVA, Sewanee, etc. My son was admitted to both Kenyon and UVA, so once his decision is made (probably this week - we just got back from spring break), a spot will open up at one of these programs.

Good luck to your daughter and others who are on waitlists or who are otherwise awaiting word from any of the writing programs.

Finally heard back from Stephen Lovely…no Iowa acceptance, but like missxsilverwing, i’m starting to get really psyched to go to Sewanee.

Writingmom, I think I’m Sewanee over Kenyon because Sewanee seems to put more focus on creative writing. It seems that at Kenyon they stress writing “as a learning tool” and some analytical writing as well as short stories, poetry, etc.
