Creative Writing Summer Programs

Got into UVA! So did a few other people I know applied…is it selective at all?

D got into UVA as well. Haven’t heard from Kenyon or IOWA.

March 27, the mail already came, and no word yet from Kenyon, Iowa or Sewanee.

RedCardinal: I applied to the same programs and haven’t heard back from any yet either. Ahhhhh… anytime in the next week!

My D got a letter in the mail today from Sewanee with a No :frowning: Actually, fewer choices make the decision easier, so we will take that as a good thing. Anyone heard anything from Kenyon?

I haven’t heard from Kenyon yet, though they sent out their decisions on Monday. Perhaps the letters will arrive tomorrow (Friday)?

As everyone is waiting for admissions decisions from various programs they applied to, I would just like to comment on my experience the past summer at Kenyon’s Young Writers Workshop. To this day, I maintain that the two weeks I spent at Kenyon’s program were the best of my life. I know a lot of people say that about writing programs, but I think that it’s especially true about Kenyon’s program.
Never before have I been with such a unique, eclectic group of people, all of whom understood and shared my passion for writing and were very accepting of individual quirks. All of the teachers were wonderfully helpful, and created great activities to help spur the creative writing process. I never thought I could have fun writing in a grave yard, but through the activities in my class I did! The program is such that we were able to produce and refine large amounts of work, but it was never a stressful atmosphere. As writers, we often critiqued each other’s work, but never in a mean way. As a whole, the program manages to intertwine intensely productive writing, with lots of fun.
Kenyon is a beautiful place to spend two weeks writing, and I cannot tell you how inspiring and wonderful the time I spent there was. If you get the chance to go, I would highly recommend it, and if you have any questions at all about the program, please feel free to contact me personally.

Very nice, thank you PrincessOCD. Where are you going this summer?

D waitlisted by Kenyon.

So I’ve been accepted to Kenyon, Bard, and UVA (still waiting for Iowa–fingers crossed!) If i do get into Iowa, though, which program do you think would be more worth the time and money? (Obviously they’re both splendid programs but I’m a rising senior in a really competitive high school so looking good on a resume is a factor that can’t be ignored :(

The Iowa Young Writers Studio is absolutely fantastic. I attended last summer (session 1), and it was absolutely life-changing. It was actually the only program I applied to, so I was pretty lucky to get in, but I’ve heard it is one of the more prestigious programs. If you got in to Iowa, I recommend attending 15000%. A fantastic experience. I’m so jealous of everyone who gets to go this year!

The mail came, and I haven’t heard from Kenyon yet! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the letter will arrive in the mail tomorrow.

Nothing today from Kenyon here as well. Deposit is due on April 1st for UVA, so we are also eager to have all our answers!

Apparently, there’s something from Kenyon at my grandmother’s house (where my mail goes) but I told them not to open it until I get there tomorrow. Nervous!

Hey! I was just waitlisted by Kenyon. Anyone know how likely it is to get accepted from the waitlist? I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised or disappointed…not to brag, but I do have a 4.3 gpa and several writing awards; the only one I mentioned in my app though was being named one of the top twelve student writers in my city this year, and the youngest one on the list at that (the only sophomore). Should I be calm, or look for other options?

My D was wait listed by Kenyon as well. Yes from UVA, No from Sewanee, so we will pay the deposit at UVA and move forward! Best of luck to all of you young writers out there. So impressed with all of you for putting yourself and your work out there. I know you will have a wonderful experience this summer wherever you end up!!

^Thank you, Kelly. Any other Kenyon results on here?

I haven’t received anything yet, but mail doesn’t come on Sundays; I’m hoping that something will come in the mail from Kenyon tomorrow. Because everyone else has heard already, I’m very nervous that something happened to the letter. I hope it didn’t get lost in the mail.

^Fscott, my S hasn’t received his letter yet either. He too is beginning to wonder if it got lost in the mail because if it was sent last Monday, it should have arrived by now.

We only got the letter from Kenyon on Saturday, so I think it is certainly possible that there is a batch still out there for delivery on Monday. I noticed on their website that it says that they won’t be willing to give admission decisions over the phone until April 4th, so they must not expect all the letters to have arrived until this week. Hang in there!
