I sent them a 2-3 single spaced short story with my address and full name on the top, but I did not include my date of birth or social security. Will they still read it?

If not, should I send another one in since the deadline is in a couple of days, but include that on the top?

Also, my personal statement uses some of the same ideas and language as discussed in my short story except not in prose form, so will admission officers be reading it, or will they turn it into their English department? If the adcoms read it, will they look negatively on the fact that I'm recycling information?

Also, I have profanity in my short story, will that be looked down upon?

If your name and address are already on it, I would call today (the third) when they are open and ask for them to clarify; however, I suspect they will tell you not to re-send it and wait a while to see if it gets sorted into your file or not. If not, then you should re-send it, but you don’t want to have the story put in your file doubly.

I seriously doubt they’d turn it over to the English department. That would be a major hassle for both sides; however, since both the story and your personal statement should be penned by you, it would be a much more significant of an issue if they did not share some common themes/styles.

In my best judgment, provided the profanity itself is tasteful, it should not be a significantly detrimental issue to your file; however, if you go around dropping f-bombs every two lines, you might want to ask them to strike it. It really depends on the degree of profanity and how well it fits into the story. Obviously, they don’t want to read a Proof-of-Concept story that you did to prove you can be profane, but skillful use of profanity shows a high degree of mastery of the English language.
