Does Rice have any creative writing (major) or art (specifically drawing) courses?

There is no creative writing major at Rice; however, there are several creative writing courses offered through the English department. It was actually one of my frustrations (perhaps my only one) with the English department at Rice that taking creative writing courses wasn’t really strongly encouraged by the major curriculum.

That said, the creative writing courses are excellent, and I highly recommend taking one, regardless of major. I took a creative nonfiction (personal essay) course my junior year, and it improved both my writing itself and the way I analyze writing, as well as my own level of self-analysis.

Now, one thing to note about creative writing courses (and drawing courses, since they’re also mentioned) is that there are a limited number of slots, and it’s competitive to get in to these courses. Different professors have different methodologies for picking — a lot give seniors and visual arts majors (in the case of drawing courses) priority, but my creative writing prof had us each submit a short writing sample. I don’t think she picked on quality so much as demonstrated enthusiasm and willingness to immerse in the course.

So yeah, the short answer is yes.

As NYSkins says, there are many courses in creative writing and art/drawing. I never did a take a creative writing course, although I took Drawing 1. We also have drawing courses for non-majors.
