Credit Cards

Ok, so I figure that it's time for me to get a credit card since I'm starting college next fall. I've always been responsible with my money, so I know I can handle a credit card....but there's so many different offers out there that I really don't know which one to chose. Anyone got any advice about what I should look for when choosing a credit card?

the one with the lowest max... like $500.

there are a lot of tempting ones that say you'll get the "loose change" and other rewards, but to be honest, i would not feel comfortable spending on credit that much money in college to make those rewards worthwhile.

Start with your own bank or credit union (or your parent's). The CU we bank at will immediately open a $300 line credit card when my D turns 18 and opens her own checking account.

And pay your bill IN FULL each month. That will help increase your credit worthiness. And keep you from getting buried financially.

Bank of America is really generous with credit lines. They extended me $1000 of credit even though I was unemployed and in a high risk factor age group (18). DON'T get a card with an annual or maintainance fees. Interest rates should not be an issue if you pay down the balance monthly.

You don't want a generous credit limit at this point. Google "student credit card" and compare the options. Citibank is one good one.

I disagree, but I suppose its a personal choice. There have been times when I have paid off a balance on my card of more than $500 so I guess 500 for me is not a sufficient maximum.
