I'll be a Freshman this fall and wanted to talk to some fellow Obies. Would people be creeped out if I randomly friended them on Facebook? Or should I just wait until I get there on August 25th to meet people?

No, you should creepily friend people! That’s what I’m doing and it’s really fun. Although I’m not sure how many real friends we’ll make just through the internet, we’ll probably re-meet everyone in August anyway.

Do it! I got randomly friended by so many people last year. Maybe 10% of them actually ended up being my friends when I got to campus… but it was really nice to meet people online so that I had at least some idea who I was going to college with. And it keeps you occupied during the long wait for Orientation.

A couple of incoming freshmen have found roommates at Oberlin for the Fall via Facebook. That’s probably too late if you’ve submitted your online housing form. But maybe not. I think you can make changes up to a certain date.

I think it’s a good thing if you have something in common, but I might advise you against friending every single person in your class. That happened in my year and that person came to school being known as that person who friended everyone in the entire class. But yes, a lot of people you then never end up meeting. And it’s kinda funny at the beginning because you’re like…oh…I’ve seen you on Facebook. Sorry if it seems like I’m being overly cynical…it can definitely turn out well too!
