<p>Anyone know anything about Creighton University and/or the city of Omaha, NE? Someone said it's a good place for a pre-med student ... but it's a school and a city we are totally unfamiliar with.</p>
<p>Very mediocre, in my opinion.</p>
<p>Creighton's pre-med program is excellent. The school is highly ranked by U.S. News. Omaha is frequently mentioned as one of the best places in the country to live. Something to that effect pertaining to young adults came out very recently, though I can't put my hands on it. I did find this 2006 article from Money Magazines listing Omaha as one of the top cities to live in:</p>

<p>Probably not going to be to helpful here, but ... my brother-in-law graduated from Creighton University and then went to law school at Harvard where he graduated second in his law class. (I know, I know, ... a personal anecdote and not even about pre-med - still thought the info might be worth throwing out for consideration.)</p>
<p>I heard some bad things about the university. i was looking into it too for a while. Someone told me the student body are real "bible thumpers" now im religious too dont get me wrong, but they are on a whole different level. Interaction of any sort with the opposite is HIGHLY looked down upon. The campus security is out of control they will give you expensive tickets for having sex, drinking, or any sort of parties. Now this may be the ideal environment for some people but its just not for me. I mean I plan to work hard in college too and eventually go to med school as well. I am not going to party every night and get completely wasted. But I want to have some form of a college experience and that just doesnt sound like the place for me. Again though I just heard this stuff through word of mouth from a student</p>
<p>Knowing an absolute TON of Creighton students (including three second cousins), I can attest that the info from John6391 is absolutely FALSE. Creighton is actually opening a bar in their student union soon.</p>

<p>A very large portion of the Creighton kids I've met through my cousins are very heavy partiers. There is plenty of hooking up going on.</p>
<p>It is a religious school, so there will be some bible thumpers, but you'll find those almost everywhere. There will be some "weapons-grade" Catholics, but it is a Jesuit school, and places like Notre Dame will likely have a lot more of that than Creighton. Plenty of the people I know from Creighton are NOT Catholic and they didn't seem to run into any sort of problems.</p>
<p>Creighton is not going to stand up to your top ranked LAC's but as a regional university it's very well thought of for undergraduate work. It does have a reputation for turning out pre-meds, though, to a certain extent, the number of pre-med graduates it turns out dilutes the quality. It's very much a pre-med factory and I do mean that in a negative tilt. It's medical school is not highly ranked. It's law school is also lacking unless you wish to stay in Omaha, in which case it's a huge benefit. Big firms in Kansas City, St. Louis and Minneapolis (not to mention Chicago) will definitely hold state school grades from Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and Missouri in higher regard over Creighton Law grads.</p>
<p>No. 1 master's university in the Midwest for several years if you are into rankings. Excellent array of health sciences programs. Smaller, caring environment.<br>
My H travels a lot and says Omaha is a very nice city. The local music scene is supposed to be very good.
It is not an overly religious school (Catholics are not generally "Bible thumpers," that's a whole other area of Christianity) but many of the Jesuit schools do have some stricter rules particularly about dorm visitation hours -- no males on female floors after midnight or two a.m., things like that.
Also offers merit aid.
I would say definitely worth checking out.</p>
<p>My father-in-law went to Creighton and he was Jewish. He went on to grad school at U. of Chicago. Obviously a long time ago. The Omaha in-laws always seem very nice.</p>
<p>I believe I mentioned several times in my post it was all information gathered from a friend who is a student, he is currently in the process of transferring. I have never been to Creighton, or even Omaha.</p>

<p>I don't have first-hand knowledge, either, but I would say that it's not for everyone but is a fit for some. In general, Creighton seems to be the kind of school that people in a certain area of the Midwest will look on favorably if you say you graduated from there but which will result in a blank stare in other parts of the country. S went to a summer camp program there while in middle school--campus is nice and, like many others, has a feel of being somewhat apart from city life, so I'm not sure being a place where you'd live as an adult matters that much. Omaha seems to have more than average amenities/options as far as relatively small midwestern cities go, but I'm not sure about haunts for college students. I do know it is quite popular in our geographic area--especially but not exclusively for Catholics--for those interested in the health sciences, and they have largely been successful in reaching their goals. None of the kids I know who go there fit (or would find comfortable) the environment john6391 describes.</p>

<p>This is of absolutely zero help. Certainly there are thousands of places for which you could say the exact same thing, and I'm sure there are millions of people who would say the same thing about where you have chosen to live. At least offer some sort of insight in to why you feel this way (or why Creighton is "very mediocre").</p>
<p>Don't get me wrong, I'm ready to get out Omaha as quickly as I can after I finish medical school for a wide variety of personal and professional reasons (reasons that wouldn't particularly matter to anyone else) but I also know a great number of people who absolutely adore Omaha. It does have a number of nice things going for it as a city of it's size. </p>

<p>Yes, Creighton is best known for producing pre-meds but it appearst that the university is trying to broaden its appeal and its ethnic diversity. For some reason, Creighton draws more than a few undergraduate students from Hawaii.</p>
<p>For pre med you want a competetive MCAT, GPA of at least 3.65, volunteer and service opportunities, research opportunities. All of these are attainable at Creighton. In fact, their medical school claims to give preference to their own graduates.</p>
<p>Nephew had a very favorable outcome after attending Medical School at Creighton (Minn native and undergrad at private college in Minn).Had lots of research opps and recognition.Now Orthopedic Resident back in Minesota.
D's friend from undergrad in Az is attending Physical Therapy school there currently.
Cost of living is reasonable for students on the grad/professional school level and both people were/are satisified with city life amenities.</p>
<p>My son was also impressed with his visit there, very livable campus.</p>
<p>Creighton is not without flaw but if you are looking for an excellent education there a few schools in the country better. </p>
<p>As for Omaha, it is not as some stated a small city but has four Fortune 500 companies thousands of hi-tech jobs and an international leader in medical research. As for the young adult nightlife there are more than enough options to keep you out of med school!</p>

<p>went to Creighton undergrad and Creighton med and lived in Omaha for a while after residency. CU is a good school. In my experience there were very few bible thumpers and we managed to have an excellent time in school outside the classroom. Rankings of medical schools are misleading as they have more to do with the research done at the school than they have to do with the quality of the medical care or the education of the medical students -- which is designed to be heavily oriented towards basic medical science and clinical medicine at every medical school. Creighton places the vast majority of it's graduating medical students into the residency of their choice, and amongst clinical physicians one's residency training speaks about their ability at least as much as their med school. As to Omaha, it's the anti New York -- it's a great place to live but you wouldn't want to visit. Omaha metro area is nearly a million people, there are several businesses headquartered there and the downtown area of the city just keeps growing and improving.</p>
