Criminal Justice major with a ~3.3+ GPA wanting to transfer to UC Davis

Hey everyone,

I’m pursuing a Criminal Justice major. This is my first year in community college. I was just wondering about my chances of transferring to UC Davis from my CC:

GPA: 3.3
Field of Study: Criminal Justice
TAG: No (missed sign up date, should i do it next year?)
Sports: Golfer (very good, possible scholarship to other schools, but idk about UC Davis, we’ll see after this season … does this help?)

I am taking Intro to Sociology (SOC300), which I have an A in. I am taking Administration of Justice (ADMJ300), which I have an A in. I am taking MATH100, but I’m freaking struggling and barely getting by with a C. I am also taking ENGWR300, which I also have an A in. I am also taking a golf class (A+) and a pretty brutal fitness class (A+). So I have straight A’s except my Math… side question; should I drop MATH100 and re-take it in Spring for a better grade? I know I could do much better if i re-took it, it’s just this year I was so out of practice and the tests really screwed me. But if I keep all of these grades, which is looking like I will, I will have a 3.38 GPA.

NOTE: I “graduated” high school junior year through the CAHSEE (california high school exit exam), I don’t know if that really qualifies or what … but I’m in CC regardless now…

With all of that in mind, what are my chances of going to UC Davis? I wouldn’t count on a scholarship for golf, although it is surely possible … just haven’t heard anything about it but, again, this is my first season in college, too…

Another side question; what is a IGETC? I know it’s a noob question. Do I only have to meet MATH120 to transfer? Oh, and a big question I had:

Do you HAVE to have at least 60 units to transfer? I read somewhere that you only have to have 30 … but I may be wrong? Currently taking 16 units this semester… my goal is to transfer before the semester of Spring of 2018, that is if I have to do 60 units. If it is in fact only 30, I may be able to get out by next year. Will the college admissions be impressed by my workload and extracurricular? Does golf and the fitness class count as “extracurricular”

Thanks everyone!

You need 60 semester units or 90 quarter units by Spring of 2017 to transfer. If you plan to TAG, then you need 30 units/45 quarter units from a California CC prior to applying.

UCD does not have a Criminal Justice major, so are you doing Sociology? Political Science?

The link for the UC TAG matrix might answer some questions: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/tag-matrix.pdf

IGETC:
The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a series of courses that California community college students may complete to satisfy the lower-division breadth/general education requirements before transfer to the California State University and some colleges and majors at UC campuses.

IGETC includes 11 courses (34 semester units) in the following subjects:

English communication
Mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning
Arts and humanities
Social and behavioral sciences
Physical and biological sciences
Language other than English
IGETC is not an admission requirement, and not all UC campuses recommend fulfilling IGETC for all majors. Consult the major-preparation paths and assist.org to determine whether IGETC is a good option for you and what courses at your community college fulfill IGETC requirements. Learn more about IGETC.

I suggest you meet with an UC transfer advisor at your CC for more information and use assist.org to map out your courses.

Thanks for the reply GumbyMom… it was very very helpful. I am taking Sociology under Law and Law Enforcement… so a sociology major, that is really a criminal justice major I guess? I want to be an officer or detective… on UC Davis’s website is says this major is good for my goals…

And on the subject of TAG – i’ve been hearing a lot about it now that I’m researching more into transfer from CCC to UC… I assume I missed the date to file an application? Will i have to wait next year? Thank you so much!

You would have to file for next year. If you check the TAG matrix, it states you need to file by Sept 30 for Fall 2017.
